The new DAB multiplex entitled "trial Portsmouth" in Fort Widley, near Portsmouth gives a good signal between and including Fareham and Chichester and the 15 stations carried, many of which are locally based, cater for all tastes. This has to be the future of radio.

Nick Anderson: Hi, Nick.We have 'Trial Norwich' here, with coverage from Mattishall to Acle and Long Stratton to North Walsham. Ditto variety of stations on the multiplex, but also including a couple that is carried on the Sound Digital multiplex elsewhere - we don't have Sound Digital here yet due to possible interference with European DAB+! Ofcom extended our Trial DAB and I expect it did to yours as well. It is clear to me that Ofcom sees these local minimuxes forming the future digital radio DAB and DAB+ provision IN THIS COUNTRY. Is there any way of finding out when local DAB on the Armagh transmitter (Northern Ireland) is due to switch on?, we can only receive the national stations from it now & have seen on Ofcoms page that there is plans to boost our station list, I find DAB coverage very poor overall across NI....

I see that Bangor North Down is due to get a DAB transmitter. Does anyone know when this will happen.
I am having reception problems both at home and also around the town in my car.

Tom Ross: The current DAB transmitter rollout programs for BBC and local multiplexes are supposed to be completed by the end of this year, but I haven't seen any dates for particular transmitters listed anywhere.

Well Armagh transmitter is now live, a little disappointed though it has only given me 10 extra stations (a total of 22), was hoping to have a similar number to the main Belfast transmitter which on last retune was roughly 60 stations...

david worth: The current planned rollout of local DAB transmitters is due to be completed by the end of this year. I've not seen anywhere that gives planned launch dates for individual transmitters.
Jason warrior: Sound Digital only covers around 75% of the UK population and is intended to operate at a lower cost for broadcasters by initially only using 45 transmitter sites rather than the 160+ that the D1 national mux uses. Coverage may well be improved in future as Ofcom have given clearance for many more transmitter sites for Sound Digital to use, however I think it is unlikely it will ever reach Shetland if you don't already get D1 now.

Jason warrior: It is most unlikely that sound digital will ever be extended to cover Orkney and Shetland. Even D1 which is basically required to serve the (intentional) coverage area of Classic FM's analogue service does not extend North beyond the Inverness service area, as it currently stands. A proposed North Scotland local multiplex which involved extending the Inverness local area to cover the whole of the North of Scotland, specifically excluded Orkney and Shetland, with a proviso that if BBC and commercial interests required the islands to be included there would have to be a revised plan drawn up to extend the editorial area of the multiplex. Realistically the options for Orkney and Shetland are either retention of existing FM services, the provision of a small scale DAB multiplex to include the existing commercial radio station, Radio Nan Gaidheal and BBC Scotland or maybe a reconfigured BBC national multiplex to include all services required to offer DAB coverage in the area. This option has been suggested by Ofcom to serve remote parts of Wales, but could require the use of a different frequency if signals are also present from transmitters carrying the normal configurations, as the arrangement would no longer work as an SFN. It really depends on how determined the government are to remove FM transmissions in the event of an FM switch off and what technical and financial limitations affect the eventual decision.
