There are several factors that use these boxes to "crash":

  • low quality input signal from the aerial
  • sudden electrical noise (such as from a refrigerator or DIY equipment)
  • failed self-updates

Like all digital computer equipment, the Freeview boxes are all designed to diagnose problems during the period after they are turned on.

If you have equipment that is failing more than you expect, you can use your rights under the "Sale of Goods Act 1974 (as amended)" to demand a working replacement within 12 months of purchase.

Hi folks,

Our Bush D250DTR set top box, sometimes stops working and then a light on the front flashes red/green while the letters Hdd are displayed on the front of the box. Sometimes it'll then start working again, at other points we've had to unplug it to get it to work again. What's going on? Is it time we started saving up for a new one?

Nigel: Regarding your latter statement, the answer is yes!, as what you have reported is inclined to indicate that the internal hard drive is on the way out, not exactly unusual with that brand of PVR.

My goodmans freeview box is stuck with the green signal on and stuck in one channel ,I have checiked for loose plugs, etc, have turned the box off for ten minutes switched on, no change, cant find any reset buttons on the box.I have also brought new batteries for the remote, this does not make any difference

Chris Salmon:

When you say you have turn the box off, did you unplug the mains supply as well? If not, then turn the box off using the remote control, switch of and unplug from the mains socket and wait at least 5 minutes - that is to clear anything stuck in the system memory. You should also remove the aerial plug from the back of the box (the one coming from your aerial and not any that may be feeding to a TV set, etc. Then reconnect the mains supply and wait a further 5 minutes. Then turn the box on with the remote control and if possible perform a full automatic tune with the aerial still unplugged. Assuming that process is performed by the now reset box, plug the aerial back in and do another automatic scan. Hopefully, you box will have reset and recovered.

Note that the Goodmans boxes are known to suffer from internal power supply faults and these sometimes show up as a box stuck with a green or yellow light remaining on. If the above procedure does not clear the problem, then it may be that the box has developed a fault internally.

Chris Salmon: Follow Mike advice, and try disconnecting it from the mains for a couple of minutes. If it doesn't power up properly after that, then give up.

I used to have one of those, and it would lock very occasionally. But as Mike says, if its gone, then its gone. They are very cheap to replace, and my advice would be either to upgrade to an HD box (about 43 quid), which would allow you to watch more channels, even if you only have an old school SD TV, and of course HD if you have an HDMI equiped TV.

Or just go for a PVR, which should have two tuners.

Phil: Do you have it attached to a working aerial? Because barely getting a single channel sounds like your getting pretty much no signal.

J Davis.

Try switching it off and then remove the mains plug from the wall socket. Wait five minutes and then put the mains plug back in carefully and wait another 5 minutes. Then switch on the box and check you get sound on BBC1.
