To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

My dad told me this morning that he lost all his channels last night, receiving only a 'No Signal' display.
He checked all the connections last night and again this morning to make sure nothing has come loose but in the same situation.
I checked for him and there appear to be no problems with the Crystal Palace transmitter, the problem appears to be with Freeview.
He's 92-years-old, lives on his own with no-one locally who can help with re-tuning [eyesight is too poor to do this himself] - help would be appreciated.

M Roberts:

Freeview is being transmitted perfectly from the Crystal Palace transmitter, if it weren't them over a millions people would be complaining! So the problem lies either with your Father's aerial, the cables or the TV set.

If you provide his full post code, we can check whether he is actually using the Crystal Palace transmitter or wether he should be using another of the over 1000 transmitters around the country.

MikeP: I live in Gloucestershire and have experienced the same issues over the past 3 months or so, channels including the BBC chanels pixilate or show as there being no signal, then they are fine until the next time. I have fitted signal boosters and have cleared the channel list as suggested by this site but I now have only 37 channels whereas according to Freeview I should be able to receive 88.
Nothing has changed at my end and there is no issue with my TV aerial, I am at loss as to what to do next

Paul B: We dont know your postcode, so we dont know how many channels you should get, but if your only getting 37 out of 88, its likely one of two things:

1) Your tuned to the wrong transmitter - perhaps a Light one. Check that

2) If you are tuned to the main transmitter, then check signal strength (remove booster first). If its low, and your missing muxes, thats a classic sign that your system has a problem.
You say otherwise, but logivally, something must have changed at your end - remember your system is made up of 6mm thicj cable, perhaps bodged together, and subject to the weather.

Check back from the TV - each cable and connection, until you narrow down the problem, including perhaps swapping out the aerial lead for another one - a cheap way to test it.

PaulB:

Please check what signal strengths are being shown on your TV set. For reliable SD services you need between 50% and 85% and for HD you need between 60% and 85%. It is important to have at least the lower figure else signal break up can occur. Likewise, you do not want more than 85% on any channel as that will overload the tuner so the TV will report either no signal or just display garbled images.

It is possible that by fitting the booster you now have too much signal, hence fewer channels than before. So try removing that from the aerial system and check what you get as well as the strengths.

TV in G63 9HT. Our Freeview service suddenly stopped yesterday 15 December and is still not working. I think we receive Freeview through a link transmitter from Blackhill. I have checked all connections and all is ok.

HC: Blackhill seems to be working fine Which Freeview channels does the Black Hill transmitter broadcast? , although you could ask your neighbours.

If your not getting a signal, then the most likely problem is with your own system. Yes, you checked some of the connections, but the signal has to travel from the aerial to your TV - thata lot of potential breaks, faults and lose connections, so its best to check again.

HC: Although Black Hill provides a signal at your location, you are also predicted to get good reception from the Strathblane and Killearn relays. Strathblane is reported to have been off air for most of yesterday afternoon/evening and has been off again since early this morning. This is likely to be due to a fault, perhaps as a result of recent bad weather, rather than planned engineering work which rarely take place overnight (especially in winter). If you are definitely tuned to Strathblane then all you can do is wait, do not attempt to retune, your channels will return on their own once the transmitter is fixed.
