Apologies, I had meant to come back and post sooner but have been quite busy.
It wasn't weather conditions causing the low signal. The signal was low before and during the most recent period of "tropo" - which turned out to be quite marginal despite predictions (not as strong as the previous conditions just before & over new year).
During this recent tropo I was seeing a slight lift in all signals from Mendip & Wenvoe (& a slight lift on some from Stockland Hill) but including Mendip COM7 which was still well below COM8's level, they are normally identical. After the tropo, the COM7 signal was still down, but a day or two after, whatever the fault was got fixed and it returned to normal levels as I mentioned in my previous post.

They are obviously still experiencing intermittent signal problems....I lost signal completely today for a significant time but now it's back at 100%. At various times recently, the signal has decreased for a short time but today's total lack of signal was for much longer.

Mendip was on Planned Engineering last week, not listed for this week but of course some may still be going on.
At present signals seem normal.

Since the changes to band allocations, last June, I have noticed that signal strengths from Sandy up at the higher frequencies have dropped off significantly and some channels are just not accessible during the day. Everything is OK (10/10) up to CH48 but CH55 struggles to make quality of 2/10 and stations like BBC NEWS HD and QUEST HD are impossible to receive. With a broadband high gain aerial, reception at the top bands were fine before, does this mean that I have to couple up a group C aerial now? I hardly think so! What is going on?

Richard:

If you didn't have any problems receiving COM7 before June 22nd, you really shouldn't have any problems now as there've been no changes to the transmitted power of COM7 (C55).

Do you know exactly what aerial you have? What sort of strength figure are you seeing for C55?
To look at the predicted reception at your location, we need a full postcode. You might unluckily be in one of those spots where reception of C55 is not as good.

But also, make sure you don't have any HDMI leads (if you have a PVR or other devices) that are close to aerial cables or flyleads, as HDMI leads can interfere with C55 if the aerial cables are not good quality and double screened.

Other than that, check that your downlead looks undamaged and that your aerial seems intact and pointing in the correct direction. also check all you coax plugs, connections, flyleads etc, unplug connectors check for corrosion or other problems and reconnect them. Flyleads can be a common problem, try swapping them. Problematic connections, water ingress etc. can seem to affect reception of just an individual or several multiplexes.

Revisiting this problem because having replaced flyleads with quality double screened variety and isolating them from HDMI leads I'm still losing CH55. There seems to be no consistency as regards weather conditions or time of day or day of the week. C/N varies between 0 and 18 which is well below the level for a good signal (should be 25 to 35). UEC data sky rockets from 0 to 200000+. Currently C/N = 19 with UEC = 331135. Occasionally I lose CH55 completely and I have to manually retune just those LCNs.

As you haven't specified a time frame, knowing that you aren't in the best of locations, it could be several things.
Recent adverse weather and Tropospheric Ducting, Mendip had been on Transmitter maintenance with "Possible weak signal" but whilst not currently listed, some of my signals don't seem upto usual strength at this time.
Post back with more info about how signal levels for the other muxes compare to your normal levels if this is persisting.

Timeframe is varied. It occurs at any time of day for any length of time but only Com7 National is affected. All other muxes return maximum signal quality and level i.e. 90%+ when Com7 is playing up.

Currently all LCNs on Com7 National are showing good results so perhaps Trops is the cause as weather conditions are much improved from last week's......but I still have niggling doubts.

Megalithia terrain map indicates an unobstructed path to Mendip transmitter.

You could be in a bit of a "not-spot" for COM7 (due to it operating as an SFN). Signals from Wenvoe and Ridge Hill will have an effect of this. As you haven't given a full postcode, I can't tell what Freeview are giving for your predicted reception for COM7. You could have a look yourself by putting your details into the boxes at Platform management | Freeview

Tropo was having variable but significant effects at varying times in different parts of the country in some previous weeks.

I get 100 GREEN on all muxes except COM7 which GREEN 99 for Served and 100 for Marginal.

Currently COM7 LCN107 is showing Signal Quality 74 and Signal Level 77 with C/N 21 or 22.

Weather is dense cloud and raining. So the cause does veer towards a weather source.
