Jamie: The first stage of switchover happens on 4 April and the second is on 18 April.
At stage one BBC Two on analogue goes off and is replaced by the digital multiplex that carries BBC channels (exc the HD ones). At stage two the other three analogue channels are turned off and replaced by the digital multiplex for ITV/C4/C5 and for HD channels.

Jeanette: Is there not a roof-top aerial?
What do the neighbours get?
Are these aerials you've referred to set-top ones or fixed/roof-top ones?
The post code might be helpful in giving a more accurate response.

Jeanette: In general, roof-top aerial is advised, although that is not to say that a set-top aerial will work in certain locations (to a certain degree).

The reason for these adverts for Freeview is because someone in London has come up with the idea. Bearing in mind that London switches next year, it comes just in time for the proceeding Christmas.

Hi Gem, if you've tried plugging the Philips HD box straight into aerial socket (you say you don't have Sky, so I guess it doesn't go through anything else anyway), then I come to the conclusion that you will have to get someone in to replace your aerial.
What was the reception like on the analogue channels? Also, what was the digital reception like before switchover?
I believe that I've located the cause of your problems. Ideally, your aerial needs line of sight with the transmitter. In cases where there isn't, that's not to say that it won't work. It merely increases the chances of having issues.
I used a website to plot the path from your location to the transmitter. Unfortunately the ground goes up towards Brierley Gap (the red lines indicate where sight is blocked):

I then went to Google Streetview and looked down Saxon Mount and found larger the normal aerials on Emley, some on high masts. Some houses have decided to point their aerials at Belmont instead. This rather confirms what I found about the terrain going upwards around Brierley Gap.
Clearly others on your estate will have the same issue.
I therefore suggest that you look at having your aerial replaced.

John: Different receivers work in different ways. It sounds as though with yours that you're going to have to do a full auto-tune.
I think that some receivers don't see the new location of particular muxes because as far as they are concerned, they already have them stored (albeit on the old channel numbers).
If running auto-tune doesn't sort out your issues, then try this procedure here:

Julie: The most likely suspect here is that your TV has tuned to the signals from the wrong transmitter as there is quite a bit of overlap where you are (according to the Digital UK predictor).
Question is, which transmitter are you on? I had a look down your street on Google Streetview and all the aerials I could see are pointing in the direction of Idle.
All are vertical (as they should be for Idle) except for the one at number 12 (it's on the chimney). If that's you at number 12, then you need to change your aerial so it's vertical rather than horizontal!
If you're not at number 12, then what make and model is your TV? Do you have others you can try (either set-top boxes/recorders or TVs)? Maybe even take the TV to another aerial, if you have one.
