lambert: It is those broadcasters' choice as to whether they transmit from your relay or indeed any transmitter. Their main interest is to maximise profit rather than provide a universal service.

If you cannot get Rowridge, then you might be able to get another high-power transmitter, e.g. Mendip. With two aerials you could then receive the correct regional programming and the commercial channels. The viability of this option will obviously depend greatly on your location.

Elizabeth: Another suggestion is to take the kitchen TV to another aerial point and try tuning it there and then returning it to the kitchen.

Roy: You could try taking the TV tuned to Bluebell Hill to the other aerial point. Then run the auto-tune scan and take it back again.

This may or may not work. It depends on how the TV selects the transmitter to go with. It could be that the aerial of the TV which is "Kent" doesn't pick up Bluebell Hill as well which could be why moving it temporarily might work. It's all ifs, buts and maybes. You will have to try it and see if it works.

Richard: HD is not broadcast from Hannington at present. It starts at switchover which is February.

D. McDonald: At just over 9 miles from the transmitter, I think that one possibility is that the signal level going into your mother's TV/box could be too high.

See this page for an explanation:

Freeview signals: too much of a good thing is bad for you | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

If there is a signal booster, then remove it. Consider getting an attentuator (£4 or £5 from eBay and other places).

Is this issue on all channels or on particular channels?

Nicola: Perhaps you could post a link to a photograph of this cable which has two ends on it.

Poor picture (breaking up) does not necessarily mean that the aerial is not up to scratch. It could be that the TV/box has tuned to a poorer signal than the one that the aerial points to and it could be therefore that which needs rectification (i.e. the TV/box needs tuning to the transmitter to which the aerial points).

If you post your post code it will help give us an idea of what transmitters you could be picking up. It would also help if you could say in which direction your aerial points.

jb38: The other thing is that prior to DSO Hunmanby was a relay of Belmont and is now relaying Oliver's Mount's PSB muxes.

It is probably worth noting that Belmont's PSBs are 150kW, ArqA and ArqB (53 and 60 respectively) are 100kW and SDN (30) is 50kW. So the coverage area of the COMs isn't as big as that of the PSBs.

Perhaps the increase in power at Oliver's Mount was done to provide Yorkshire regional programming to those who currently get Tyne Tees/North East or Lincolnshire/East Yorkshire, as appears to be the case in some parts of Filey.

Stuart O.: This would be useful information. Obviously the same goes for the BBC.

It would be useful to people who have a choice of which transmitter to use, or where someone is considering switching transmitter in an effort to get better reception; they may wish to know whether the other transmitter broadcasts the same or different sub-regional programming/news.

David Taylor: The fact that you have been watching BBC South instead of BBC West means that you haven't been tuned to the signal from Mendip. Based on the Digital UK predictor and your observations it would seem likely that it is picking up Oxford.

There might not be a straightforward fix and the way to proceed probably depends on the design of your receiver. Some are better than others with regards manual tuning.

If possible, you need to wipe all the existing tuned channels and then manually tune in the five Mendip multiplexes (six if you have HD).

If you would like some help with this, then post the make and model of the device and I'll see if I can find the instructions for it so as to guide you as to what you need to do.

Mikethemix: Try manually tuning to Ch31.

It is a possibility that you won't be able to pick up HD until switchover next year.

The Crystal Palace HD multiplex does not serve as big as area as the other (standard definition) multiplexes it broadcasts.

In particular, the Reigate digital transmitter uses the same frequency, so the amount of signal that Crystal Palace throws out in that direction will be much less than in other directions. You may well be having problems because of this measure.
