From what I can gather, this has something to do with RT One HD becoming available a few months ago.

Idris Martin: Some receivers give network/region names, these names being the principal coverage areas of the transmitters.
Your difficulty may be caused by the fact that the three COM multiplexes of Stockland and Rowridge are co-channel. You don't have line-of-sight with either stations. The Isle of Purbeck is in your way for Rowridge.

If yes, then I guess you are watching the "old" standard definition RT One.
If the TV receives Freeview and Saorview then maybe BBC One is on logical channel number 1 and that RT may be in the 800s. You may find that the "new" RT One HD is further up in the 800s. Depending on design of the set you may be able to swap the new RT One HD for the old RT One.

What appears in my posting as "RT" should be RTE with an E-acute but for some reason doesn't display like that (on my PC at least).

Caradon Hill is "Phase 2" - there is no indication that Plympton will be included and the transmission power will probably be lower than the main Freeview channels and it will likely be directional (as are other "local" TV channels).

The gain curves of logs are much flatter than those of yagis, plus you would appear to be in a good signal area so the log must be the best bet.
You can't use a Grouped aerial because Mendip uses channels across the entire band. Also, current Mendip Group C/D channels may be moved downwards in future to accomodate more mobile services.

Nell: In Co Leitrim they may be able to receive from a Freeview terrestrial transmitter in the North, as well as Saorview from the South.
Obviously you can't pick up a terrestrial signal from Ireland. You won't get a satellite signal (Saorsat) either because the footprint doesn't cover the UK mainland. So you aren't likely to be able to watch RTE etc at your location.
The reason is as you suggest - it's to do with rights.
You could look to see if you could watch online, although I suspect you'll be disappointed. BBC iPlayer, for example, prohibits viewing outside of the UK and this is for the same reason.

Colin1951uk: I don't think the issue is with your equipment.
I have a 4:3 CRT TV with Sony RDR-HXD870 PVR set for 4:3 letterbox and RT has appeared as anarmorphic 4:3 widescreen for several days now - that is the 16:9 picture it fills the 4:3 screen with no black bars, so figures on the screen are squashed and are tall and thin.
A 16:9 LG TV shows Film4+1 as 14:9.

SR7 is a very large area over which reception possibilities vary. However, across that area Pontop Pike is the most used full-service transmitter, so I shall assume that it is that which you are receiving from in the absence of knowledge of which transmitter your aerial is pointing to.
Refer to the page for Pontop Pike (County Durham, England) transmitter | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice and at the top you will see it says Digital TV is "liable to interruption" - so there are ongoing engineering works.
