Freeview reception at BT44 8SP

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

I bought a HD set-top box yesterday, and when connected it said "No Signal". I live at the top of Hatherleigh and get good digital reception at 2 Martins Close, EX20 3GB. The aerial is in the roof. Should I try another box?

I'm just checking for my mother-in-law. She recently had a replacement aerial fitted. Since then she has had to keep retuning BBC 1. Postcode is FY5 2HF. I assume she is on the Winter Hill transmitter. Anybody else having issues?

Thanks.

Installed our new TV last week. New Samsung LED Smart TV.

Had no end of problem tuning it, brought a new fly lead which improved it, however it got worse today. Not sure how old the aerial is though. But in the end we managed to get all the channels. Only problem is ITV1 ITV2 etc. are all blocky... until you put your hand/something metallic behind the tv... any ideas?

I did notice that there are 2 cables in the wall socket! 1 has been cut and left open.

Steve McHarg: have you checked your signal strength and which transmitter your tuned to?

If you click on the 'home to mast plot' or Digital UK tradeview links, you can see you should be tuned into Sutton Coldfield or Waltham. If your signal strength is very low, then it might be another transmitter being picked up first, or if too high (90-100%) then that will also cause problems. If its too high, search for 'too much of a good thing' on this website.

Cheers MikeB,

I will have a look at them!

Signal strength/quality is all over the place when on those channels. Good channels are 55/100 for strength. 100/100 quality.

Any idea what might be causing the interference to disappear when something 'shields' the back of the tv?

JB38:

I posted about a month ago, with no reply - but Ted seems to have reported a similar problem to me.

I just attempted to reduce the signal as far as possible, using a signal attenuator and multiple cables and connectors. I got it to the point that BBC1 was just breaking up - but still a manual scan on channel 21 returned no channels. The signal strength was around 40% (no numbers - just a bar), but signal quality did not change from 0%, and nothing was found.
The TV tuner was less useful and just returns "0 channels". I can only get signal strength for tuned-in channels there.

Both the PVR and TV are capable of receiving Freeview HD, and have in the past. Is it possible the loft aerial is boosted so much it scrambles the HD channels with a recent increase in signal power?

There is an unconnected aerial on the side of the building, but it is small and only one storey up. It may be worth a shot?

dsb: According to the terrain indicator your location would appear to be line-of-sight with Sandy (trees or man made structures excluded) and as such nothing stands out as an immediately obvious reason for your difficulty in receiving C21 except the factor mentioned by yourself of an excessively high signal level, the tuners used in some HD receivers (e.g: LG / Samsung) being most intolerant to this sort of situation.

When you mention the loft aerial is "boosted so much" are you meaning that you do have some form of amplification on this aerial? because if you have then this could well be the reason for your problem and so you should try a test with the amp being bypassed, in other words not just switched off as this would immediately turn it into a high level attenuator.

Maybe you could also let me know the model numbers of your TV as well as your PVR.

Well Dear all,
The confusion continues, as you know only been suffering with intermittent blocky pictures and sound glitches on channel 60 programmes from Oxford, all other channels fine on Sony KDL375500. Latest is that i borrowed a freeview hd set top box which is at low level on top of my dvd recorder / hard drive and i now do not have any interference at all.
However I have looked at the signal and quality meter on the alba set top that i have borrowed and it is saying for most channels 100% signal 7 to 10% quality, however the picture seems fine to me, thinking back i also got the same kind of readings with my daughters tv when i plugged it in to the same Ariel socket, however the picture looked fine to me on that too.
The Sony on the same socket says 100% signal but does not show the quality.
Have dropped a note in to neighbor to ask about a baby monitor or simular near the wall.
So my question is could this be the Sony TV on the blink? or is this just because the set top box is in a different location lower and further from the wall than the back of the sony tv? I suppose it could be both........dam this is doing my noggin in, dont really want the expense of a set top box and another remote either.

Again thanks for all the advice

Rob

Redruth

UHF Channel 52 multiplex from Redruth transmitter has in the past week caused some erratic problems on it's associated Freeview channels ie 11, 12, 42 travel channel and 82 Sky News etc the picture is watchable but the sound is interupted.
I am nearby - within sight of the transmitter between Redruth and Portreath - on high ground about 4 miles from the antenna.

Tried all options- re tune, check cables and antenna in attic and connections on coax cables - all seem fine. So interesting that it is only today 22 Jan 2014 that a Transmitter maintainence is schedules on this website. Searching the BBC engineering website indicated it was not their problem as BBC channels were OK.

Dave: At such close proximity to this high power transmitter you could potentially find yourself with an excessive signal level. The effect of too much signal can appear the same as that of too little a signal.

Does the signal strength and quality constantly dip? This might suggest too much signal.

Perhaps the works necessitate use of the reserve antenna array for at least C52 and that results in the signal being a little stronger for you.
