Freeview reception at TD7 5HH

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

Bharat: It probably won't cause a problem but I suspect it isn't giving any benefit and so is surplus to requirements.

It had crossed my mind that you could use the Commtel (2 Way "Blister") amplifier in the loft, at least temporarily until a replacement for the other is found - if it is found to be at fault. However, if the connectors aren't the usual type found on TVs then it won't be suitable.

As far as the tuning goes, you need to get the TV tuned again. Manual tuning, if it is available on your set, will allow you to input the UHF channel (frequency) and should give an indication of strength/quality, this usually before you press the button to scan.

For the Midhurst transmitter, which is that you are using, BBC is on UHF channel 55 (746MHz) and ITV/C4 is on C56 (754MHz). The other standard definition channels are 54, 59 and 50 (738MHz, 778MHz and 706MHz respectively). If it's a HD set then C58 also needs tuning (which is 770MHz). This might be a quicker route to sitting and waiting for it to run the automatic tuning everytime do something different in an effort to restore service.

Bharat: If you're using the 2-Way amplifier to split the signal and send it 2 ways then maybe it serves a purpose.

I have just received a YOUVIEW box from TalkTalk. All is well on reception of all channels except for receiving BBC News HD and BBC4 HD and CBBC HD. on Youview channels 106 107 and 74. I see these channels are on Freeview channels 31 and 35. I have tries retunes etc but to no avail. Will I need a new wideband aerial? Can you please help

My postcode is PR9 7QZ and receive tv from Winter Hill.

John Plumtree: Where are you, a postcode would help, do you know which transmitter you use?

Russ Dring: Sorry I just noticed you have given a location! If you have a group c/d aerial on Winter Hill, then a wideband aerial is strictly speaking necessary as the new Com 7 and 8 are in group a frequencies 30-38.

Bad or no reception in surrey/hants area.

2-3 days ago the already bad reception in our area(GU35 8) got steadily worse and broke down completley last night on virtually all frequenies. Now it is ALL frequencies!

Is there eng. Work going on around here?

John Plumtree: Unfortunately, evidently so. This is because your aerial is probably a Group C/D one which means it is most sensitive to frequencies in the top third of the ban, which is where Winter Hill's has been up to now.

The new quasi-national HD multiplex has been fitted in on a previously unused portion of frequencies which are well below those of C/D, hence a wideband aerial might prove necessary.

BBC News HD (and BBC Four HD for that matter) should, on the signal strength screen, be shown as being tuned to UHF channel 31 (554MHz), this being the broadcast from Winter Hill.

An amplifier (booster) might help. If you have one fitted and it is variable it might be worth increasing it a bit to see if reception of the new HD mux improves.

If you do get a wideband aerial it should be a log periodic, without question, rather than a yagi.
