Updated - changes to Freeview channel numbers this week on September 19th 2012
Brian Butterworth published on UK Free TV As an update to the original plan (see Freeview channel numbers change on September 19th 2012) - the changes to Freeview this week will now be less extensive than planned, as two channels have appealed the changes.
The main changes are shown in this diagram below. You will need to do a "first time installation" to ensure the channel numbers are correct. See My Freeview box has no EPG ... or the channel line up is wrong if you don't know what to do. Another option is the list of retune instruction leaflets and manuals on the Freeview Retune - list of manuals page.
The changes are now:
- Dave and Yesterday swap over to 12 and 19
- Really and Gold (subscription) swap over to be 17 and 20
- The Food Network moves to 48 (from 49)
- The Jewellery channel moves to 49 (from 60)
- Local TV services are reserved 8 (England and Northern Ireland) and 45 (Wales and Scotland)
- RTE1, RTE2 and TG4 are reserved 51, 52 and 53 - these start on a special "mini multiplex" for Northern Ireland on Wednesday 24th October 2012.
- Argos TV starts on 55
- Text services move to 200-224: 200 BBC Red Button; 201 Teletext Holidays; 202 Rabbit; 203 Gay Rabbit; 204 1-2-1 Dating; 205 Mail Travel; 206 Sky Text.
- MHEG services move to 225-299: 225 VISION; 226 CCTV; 227 Sports Tonight; 228 Connect 1; 229 Connect 2; 230 Connect 3; 231 Racing TV; 232 The Space.
HD channels move to 101-120 The "normal" order of channels is restored to HD: 101 BBC One HD; 102 BBC HD; 103 ITV1 HD or STV HD or UTV HD; 104 Channel 4 HD; 105 S4C Cirlun. - (Not 100% sure this is confirmed)

Live in Carlisle Cumbria and have retuned 3 times. Did have 142 channels now have 117 and no longer get BBC Scotland. Any ideas please?

Roy Lightfoot: I imagine that you are supposed to be receiving from Caldbeck. It broadcasts English North West regions as well as Scottish regional variants towards Scotland.
If your receiver has manual tuning, then that might be the only way to get the Scottish regional variants. See this posting I made to John H last week on the same issue:

The services (what you've referred to as "channels") are broadcast on multiplexes. A multiplex is a single signal of which there are six. See this page for the six multiplexes:

So PSB1 carries BBC One, BBC Two etc.
Focus on one service from each multiplex and ensure that you have them and that they are tuned to the correct UHF channel. The first in each is what I advise, these being BBC One, ITV1, BBC One HD (if applicable), ITV3, Pick TV and Film4.

After the changes to channel numbers and a retune on 17th Oct, my AOC television has, at last, decided to put the channel numbers in the correct order, and not have ITV1 and others start at channel 800. Perhaps the Oxford transmitter had channel number info in a format that my TV didn't recognise, last time round. Thanks for people's advice last time.

It is now 27 OCT. UP UNTIL 2 DAYS AGO I WAS RECEIVING "YESTERDAYS" CHANNEL 19 LOUD AND CLEAR. SUDDENLY I AM NOW GETTING "NO SIGNAL" OR SIGNAL TOO WEAK ETC.
DAVE ON 12 IS STILL PERFECTLY OK ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOTICED A FEW CHANNELS(THAT I DO NOT WATCH REGULARLY, ARE ALSO GIVING THE "NO SIGNAL"
I LIVE IN SHREWSBURY, WEST MIDLANDS - WITH CLEAR VIEW OF WREKIN TRANSMITTER FROM MY HOUSE.
ANY HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS - PLEASE.

G.S.CLARKE: These two programmes you have mentioned are broadcast on different transmitters this being why one is OK and the other isn't, the one not Yesterday(EPG19) being on COM6 mux Ch47 and with Dave(EPG12) being on COM5 mux Ch44.
If you have not tried to retune, and for a programme dropping out should never be done anyway as all that's achieved is to lose everything already stored, then you should select "Yesterday" and carry out a signal strength check on it, as the signal will still be there but sitting just under the reception cut off threshold, note whatever it is and try the same test on "Dave" then compare the the two levels, as although the latter might appear to be OK its received strength is possibly not that far above that of Dave.
As you have not provided a post code (or one from nearby) your reception possibilities cannot be checked on, and so just in case you are in an area where an alternative transmitter can be picked up when you carry out the signal strength check note the mux channel number associated with the level indication, Yesterday mux Ch47 and Dave mux Ch44.
Further info provided dependant on findings, as I haven't noticed any transmitter problems having been reported as yet, although there is always the possibility of interference from some other transmitter using the same channel being the cause of the problem.

After a freeview update notice appearing on our T.V. we updated and ever since we have only had 10 channels none of which are BBC or radio etc. We have tried re-tuning several times, cutting the power off, and also re-tuning after the aerial has been removed and replaced as suggested elsewhere, still no change!

Karen: When you say that the aerial has been removed and replaced have you actually been receiving anything after this has been done? because if you haven't then what method was used to align the aerial and to which station was it directed towards?

john: As Guisborough sits at the bottom of the moor which carries its name and there are trees on the slopes, it is probably the case that quite a few people in Guisborough will only receive PSBs.
This is because the Guisborough relay transmitter carries only PSB channels and because, for those who receive from Bilsdale directly, its COM channels (those not carried by Guisborough and which you have lost) are on lower transmission power than its PSBs and they use a less robust (less fragile) signal mode.

john: The "less fragile" should say "more fragile".
Imagine if the signals were a courier service where fragile parcels a received broken but non-fragile ones aren't (i.e. they don't bash them about enough to break the non-fragile ones).
