I am able to receive all freeview channels from the Blackmountain transmitter through a grid aerial and i-can HD box. I am in Newtownards, but am unable to receive the NIMM for RTE. Can anyone suggest why this is.

Michael McCann: In Newtownards, I don't think that you will be receiving Freeview channels from Black Mountain. Divis is the main high power transmitter which serves your area. Black Mountain does broadcast Freeview, but only at low power so as to cover a small area that can't receive from Divis.

However, Black Mountain does broadcast the NIMM. For a lot of the large area that it is intended to serve, Divis and Black Mountain are on near enough the same bearing that a single aerial will work. This was also the case for Channel 5 analogue (which was Black Mountain rather than Divis).

I'm not familiar with the i-Can boxes, but can you try doing a manual tune on UHF channel 39? Select DVB-T2 mode, rather than DVB-T mode, if there is such an option. Once you've entered the channel number wait before pressing the button to scan the channel; see if it gives any indication as to the strength and quality on that channel.

Dave Lindsay: Thanks for quick response, I have tried to manually scan ch 39 but it says RF Cchannel with no option to change. My signal quality ranges between 90-100% and strength between 46-58% depending on channel.would it be a simple matter of realigning or raising the aerial.

Michael McCann/Dave Lindsay: It's worth remembering that the NIMM is broadcast with horizontal polarity, but the rest of the services from Black Mountain are vertical.

This is because the NIMM is "matching" the services from Divis.

Michael McCann: What is the strength on? Is this on the NIMM?

An aerial's gain (in one direction) is at the expense of greater "loss" in other directions. Therefore, a higher gain aerial (if used for transmission) focuses the signal on a narrower beam. Grid aerials have a very wide acceptance angle (over which they are sensitive) and therefore have much lower gain than something which is directional: a yagi or a log periodic.

Thus, whilst you can obviously try, the wide angle of sensitivity would lead me to think, at this stage, that the direction of the aerial won't be that critical.

Another reason I asked you about manual tuning and seeing if it gave a reading is because it could be that you have a signal that is strong enough, but which doesn't have the quality, perhaps due to another transmitter broadcasting on C39. If that were the case, then perhaps the wide acceptance angle of your aerial is contributing to the reception of interfering signal. And so, re-orientating your aerial might help reduce interference.

These are just possibilities I'm throwing your way. The nearest and most likely interfering C39 transmitter would appear to be Larne at 400W which is vertically polarised (as opposed to Divis/Black Mountain NIMM which are horizontally polarised).

Black Mountain is only six degrees anti-clockwise of Divis. However, Larne is clockwise so turning it anti-clockwise might reduce interference from Larne "if" that is what it is, and I'm not that sure that it is.

Briantist: That was my initial thought when I read Michael's posting, at 8:25AM. However, on looking at his location, it became clear that he isn't going to be receiving Freeview from the Black Mountain relay.

Michael McCann: There is an explanation of how a grid aerial works here:

Aerials, TV Aerial and Digital Aerial

The typical gain curve for a grid is interesting:

Gain (curves), Again

It suggests that the gain, like a wideband yagi, is higher when you get to the mid-30s. Maybe turning it a bit anti-clockwise might be worth a shot.

jane: If there is a signal amplifier (booster) within the aerial system then this could have failed or it could be without power.

An amplifier without power or which has failed is likely to give no signal out, even when there is one going in. Don't assume that even though its power light is on that it is in full working order; the light merely indicates that there is power to the unit.

Try bypassing the amplifier, if you can.
