To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Colin Stone, Tony Sole:

DO NOT RETUNE! The current weather patterns appear to be causing widespread reception problems. All retuning will do is lose what channels you currently have.

Victoria rance : Is ITV working on channel 3? Both are carried on the same frequency (along with Channel 4 and Channel 5) so we need to know if those are working to offer further advice.

Angela Rennie:

We need a full post code so we can determoine what the transmission and reception conditions are for your exact location. As there is no reported problem with the transmitters in your vicinity, it is likely to be some other cause.

Would you please check the signal strengths reported on your television for the channels causing you problems.

My local Freeview transmitter is Sutton Coldfield. I live in Erdington. Freeview channel 74 seems to be beset with problems, mainly major pixellation, and no signal. I frequently select channel 74, only for the screen prompt:- "Invalid channel" to be displayed. I followed the procedure to check that the channel line was empty. It was. I reconnected the aerial and scanned again. The channel line up was restored, but channel 74 was still unavailable. All other Freeview channels are working fine, and picture - perfect.
Any suggestions?

Rodney Coleman: You havn't give a postcode, so we have no idea what your signal should be like. However, you've evidently lost a mux, so check signal strength across the board, and other chanels on that mux. If that mux is relatively weak one, and your system is failing (which is the most likely cause), that will tend to go first.

You said that other channels are 'picture perfect' - they might well be, but that doesn't mean there is not a problem. Digital signals are fine until they are not - so something like BBC1 might seem OK, even though its hanging on by a thread.

Most likely cause is a dodgy wire or connection, leading to low signal strenght, and that mux going first, whilst weakening the others.

Hi

I'm getting awful reception on PSB2, but all OK on the other muxes. This applies whether I use the PVR or the
tuner in the TV, so I'm pretty sure it's not my equipment. My aerial is in the loft, so weather isn't
an issue. Is this mux on reduced power or anything?

We've had occasional loss of signal and breakup on PSB2 before, but never as bad as this.

I'm in TR12 7AX

about 50 years ago the Americans put a man on the moon. last week i lost all HD channels. recently i lost all channels except BBC and a load of rubbish shopping channels. now i have just lost BBC. it seems that in the UK we cannot build decent transmitters. every time we get some rain, the Malvern transmitter loses HD obviously "we do not hve the technology". let's hpoe the weather changes soon.

geoff hall: The Americans wernt to the moon, but they checked out systems first.

Look at RTI's link - Malvern currently has a weak signal today, probably due to engineering work. But since your just 8.8km from the transmitter, your signal should be amazingly good, even at the worst of times. Logically, your aerial system is kaput, and I suspect that its at best hanging on by its fingertips, with rainwater getting into the system which pretty much kills it.

At just 9km from a main transmitter, the weakness of the transmitter would not have been the first thing that came to mind...
