From Wikipedia: The channel's annual budget for 2011/12 is 1,166.6 million.3 Along with the BBC's other domestic television stations, and many European broadcasters and some in Asia, it is funded principally by the television licence fee, and therefore shows uninterrupted programming with no commercial advertising at any time. It is currently the most watched television channel in the United Kingdom, ahead of its traditional rival for ratings leadership, ITV1. This system used a vertically-scanned image of 30 lines just enough resolution for a close-up of one person, and with a bandwidth low enough to use existing radio transmitters. - en.wikipedia.org read more about BBC One (SD) on wikipedia (summary by Clipped).

consistent cracking noises on sound coupled with momentary freezing of picture,channel 15 and 24 won't tune in,{Belmont transmitter}
Dealers say this is due to some changes from analogue not yet complete across their coverage area hence signal strength has not been increased. But Belmont seem to indicate they have no reported problems.I can report that this problem is rife in the area and the word on the street is come back analogue.What is the true current situation in this area.

Stuart Grainge: Without knowing your location (post code) I can only say that Belmont is presently operating on low power for some of the multiplexes (groups of channels). This is due to be increased this Wednesday.
Any report of "no problems" is as it says. It was planned that this low power would be the case, so as to not cause interference with another area that has yet to switch over.

I am in Cotgrave, South Nottingham. I am losing BBC East Midlands on Freeview after all the retuning. I can get BBC Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Midlands and if I retune then BBC EM appears strongly on Channel 1 as it used to, BUT it vanishes overnight with BBC 2 as well and Channel 1 shows ITV1. If I retune all channels it returns but overnight it goes again. Any ideas what I can do anyone ?

Les Norman: What transmitter is your aerial pointing at?
You say that you have retuned back to EM (which your box over-rules). How did you do this?
