Chris.SE: Thanks for the information.
Assuming both local DAB multiplexes are up and running in Cumbria by December. My area of Dumfries & Galloway region will benefit from the additional choice of DAB digital radio services. The Sandale transmitter is to power the Bauer multiplex signal at 5Kw.

When listening to a National DAB station from a national mux ,when passing a local DAB mast , the national station is suppressed by the local mast when within 2-300 yards of the mast. It may also happen on while passing a national DAB mast while listening to a local DAB station as well .
Does anyone know why this happens ?
When I am passing Braintree Grid , local DAB no loss , but national cuts out .

I hope someone has a definitive answer, I don't (I can make guesses) , but in case it's relevant, what make and model is the receiver?

Richard Owen: It's probably down to the tuner in your radio being deafened by the nearby transmitter, especially if it is broadcasting on an adjacent channel to the one you you're tuned to. Some transmitters have had the adjacent frequency mux added at low power in order to overcome this issue.

That was my guess. I don't know how common a problem tuner desensitising is in these circumstances which is why I asked about make and model of radio. I've not heard anyone else say they've had this, so whether it's just certain radios, I don't know.

Many thanks for the answers , my rx was a VW factory fitted standard DAB radio , then I bought a plug in plus receiver , the dropout happened on both.
Now I have a newer VW car with another factory fitted DAB and DAB plus radio , it still happens on the Braintree mux.
I was on the M40 near High Wycombe and passed another local mux , the same dropout happened for 600 or so yards.

Hmm, a bit of a difficult problem to overcome. You can't really angle DAB transmitting antenna so as to not have such a strong signal at ground level near the transmitter.

Quote "Arqiva Bilsdale say it's none of their business"
Who exactly did you speak to?

Arqiva are the organisation responsible for the Bilsdale transmitter which did transmit DAB, FM and Telecoms as well as DTT!
We were all under the impression that only DTT was currently being restored from the temporary "Bilsdale Quarry" mast, however there's a BBC report **Updated Thursday 14th October** which says -
"- DAB radio - Following the activation of the temporary mast, 30,000 households should now have improved DAB service. If you had previously lost DAB services we recommend you rescan your radio, as the new temporary mast won't appear in the Transmitter Checker tool yet."

Many thanks for the DAB and plus answers, its ok I can live with it for a minute or so driving past.
One more question ,SDN has lots of dropouts in the car Halstead and Sudbury town centre`s very low in the valley , not served by Sudbury mast either.
Nearest masts Great Baddow (Chelmsford), Colchester and Mendlesham Suffolk. If we are having radio DAB switchover ,SDN need more masts and power , otherwise its pointless
Any news if that will ever happen?
