To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Hayley: Mendip is one of quite a number of transmitters listed as having ongoing engineering works:

Planned engineering works | Freeview

I suggest you use manual tuning to restore the channels. Automatic tuning, as well as deleting everything already stored, goes through all the broadcast channels -- with manual tuning you can scan just those used by Mendip.

There are six multiplexes, each of which is a single signal which is on a particular broadcast (UHF) channel. The full list of Freeview channels is here, along with which multiplex ("mux") each is carried on:

Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview

The UHF channels for the six multiplexes from Mendip are:

PSB1 - BBC A - C32 (BBC standard definition TV and radio)
PSB2 - D3&4 - C34 (ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5 and some sister channels)
PSB3 - BBC B - C35 (all HD channels, BBC and non-BBC)
COM4 - SDN - C48
COM5 - Arq A - C33
COM6 - Arq B - C36

The manual tuning screen may give indication as to strength and quality of the signal. Enter/select the UHF channel number and give it 10 seconds or so and see whether it gives indication that there is a signal there. There might be but it's at too a low a level to resolve a picture. Having left it 10 seconds or so, try scanning the UHF channel to see if it can pick up the programme channels.

Some TVs have a built-in amplifier/booster that can be enabled, usually by individual channel. If there is such an option within the on-screen settings and you cannot get the TV to tune without it on, turn it on and try again. In some cases the amplifier may be called 'LNA' (low noise amplifier).

If your TV has an amplifier and you manage to get it tuned without the amplifier on but the picture breaks up, try turning the amplifier on to see if it makes things better.

Hayley:

In addition to the information provided by Steve, and despite your distance from Mendip, your are predicted to be able to receive the Local Multiplex from Mendip which is on UHF channel C30.

For the last few months now I've had no bbc channels no itv channels no channel four channels. This can be weather dependent though on the channel 4 channels. I have a newish aerial but an old Samsung television with a built in settop box. Is this the issue because sometimes it feels like the signal isn't strong enough because it an be patchy and like I said earlier weather dependent it that doesn't mean bad weather sometimes good weather effects it. Any advice would be welcome.

Max :

There could be all sorts of reasons Max, not just a weak signal but maybe interference. We really need a full postcode to give any constructive comment or advise. We've no idea which transmitter you are predicted to get or how reliable the signal may be.

Over the last month we have lost HD transmission completely and are suffering no BBC/ITV channels at all until late evening .We have an aerial mounted it the loft and can see Bedmond tower that is approx 2 miles away, we have never had any problems receiving any of the digital channels. All the TV's in the house have been retuned late evening to make sure that they are all responding the same. We have checked the maintenance for Bedmond tower and none seems to active.
If you could respond to this email it would be very helpful.

Lionel Hayward:

You received a reply to your previous post here I have now lost all signal can you tell me what the problem might be? | free and easy for 21 years
At the time, the Hemel Hempstead and some other London transmitters were the subject of Planned Engineering and you were advised not to retune. You were not the only one to have had a problem because of the Planned Engineering, and the transmitter was initially listed at the beginning of this week as still having engineering work.

IF you were previously correctly tuned then retuning when you have No Signal or badly pixellated pictures usually results in your correct tuning being cleared. You cannot tune to signals that aren't there or can't be decoded. You can also get tuned to weak and unreliable signals from another transmitter which is possible in your postcode.
IF you'd been correctly tuned, it doesn't matter whether the loss of signal is due to faults, engineering or weather conditions, you just have to wait until signals return to normal and not retune.

Check in your TV Tuning section whether you are correctly tuned to Hemel Hempstead's UHF channels these are C40, C43, C46, C37, C31, C29, and the local multiplex on C34. (C means UHF channel).
Those are in the multiplex order -
PSBs1/BBCA, PSB2/D3&4, PSB3/BBCB HD, COM4/SDN, COM5/ArqA, COM6/ArqB and Local.

For what is usually an up-to-date list of which TV channels are carried on which multiplex, see
Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview

Where people can get signals from more than one transmitter and have become incorrectly tuned, the best cure is to clear the existing tuning (auto retune with the aerial unplugged) then MANUAL retune of the wanted UHF channels only (not automated retuning).
You can try an automatic retune but it won't always restore channels correctly and you may find some wanted channels in the 800s of your EPG.

IF you are correctly tuned and still having problems there's another possibility - you should have received a postcard from Restore TV warning about possible interference from new/upgraded phone masts starting to use the 700MHz band for 4G/5G. There's getting on for a dozen such masts within 1.5km of you.
see https://restoretv.uk/post…ure/
You should contact them on 0808-1313-800 for a free filter.
As you have more than one TV then I assume you have some sort of amp/splitter. Any filter must be fitted between the aerial and any amp/splitter.
Give Restore TV details of your installation, aerial, any pre-amp, amp-splitters etc. The may decide to send an engineer free of charge rather than just send filters.

Damon: Which transmitter is it you are on? Is it Hemel Hempstead (Pimlico)? If so then refer to the page for the transmitter:

Hemel Hempstead (Hertfordshire, England) Full Freeview transmitter | free and easy for 21 years

While we cannot know that the cause is the same, someone on the opposite side of the transmitter is reporting the same issue.
