To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

I bought a bush tv with freeview built in yesterday and despite Sony getting all channels the bush tv is only picking up a poor quality BBC 1 and 2. Do you think I should take the bush back and get another brand? I live in IV2.

Bottom line as my expert son says this switch to digital makes no sense. Digital gives commercial organisations (TV companies) greater capacity to feed to customers but the signal we still watch on our televisions is analogue.

My post code: PE4 7GN.
I was fine until today. I noticed some of the ITV channels had disappeared this evening (ITV3, ITV2+1, at least), though everything else was ok, so retuned. What a mistake! Now my BBC channels, which were ok until I retuned, are now all weak and full of interference. On further investigation I have found that all the BBC channels are now coming from East Yorks and not my nearest (Sandy Heath, Camb & Beds) for some unbeknown reason. I have found the Sandy Heath BBC channels, but these are all in the 800 range and not at my convenient 1,2, etc. I've tried doing a complete reset and not just a retune, several times now, with no success. It always puts the weaker E Yorks BBC channels at the lower end channel numbers.

I can only assume there is some sort of signal strength overlap following the transmitter digital signal boosts, as I have never had this problem before with my freeview box (a Humax PVR-9200T), which I have had since 2006, through several retunes.

I am contemplating a manual retune, however what signal channel (21-68ish range) should I do a manual retune against to get the Sandy Heath BBC channels?

Apologies if a query inadvertantly came from me - I was actually showing a neighbour how your excellent website works ! I actually retuned for the Sandy Heath update today and now have better overall reception on all 6 Muxes, albeit some are still on Low Transmission. Nonetheless signal is sufficient not to break up the programs in those Muxes. Even HD is fine despite running the bedroom TV from a loft aerial after a bit of juggling the position.

Keep up your good work

BERNARD MARTIN: As long as your reception is above the "digital cliff" threshold, you should be sure of continued excellent reception of all six multiplexes from Sandy Heath, even if the commercial multiplexes have not yet all moved to their final power levels.
