To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Sarah C: Its not unusual for reception from a low powered multiplex such as Pick TV is presently using to go downhill slightly when the main PSB mux on the station has switched to high powered operation, the reason for this being that the signal from the high powered transmitter has the effect of slightly desensitizing your receivers tuner, this resulting in a signal that's already on the weak side appearing to be even more so.

This will automatically be rectified on the 27th when all six multiplexes are transmitting on the same power, rather than at present where Pick TV is only running at 3kw whereas the BBC is on 20Kw.

Bluebell Hill transmits 20KW, Crystal Palace transmits 200KW. Before switchover my BBC channels on Freeview were 100% signal Strength and Quality. Now BBC channels are 20% signal strength and 40% quality. I am 4 miles from Bluebell Hill and told to pay for my aerial to be repositioned to Crystal Palace 20+ miles away. We already pay an outrageous licence fee and are now expected to pay more because of BBC incompetence

Adrian Bance: Although your BBC reception might have dropped down to 20% strength have checked to make sure that your TV or box hasn't carried out an automatic channel update and that this lower strength indication isn't from Crystal Palace? as BBC from Crystal Palace is on Ch23 whereas its Ch46 from Bluebell Hill.

Signal strength / quality indicators usually always show the mux channel number that's associated with the indication so have a check using the above for reference, and should this have happened then you will require to manually tune in Bluebell Hill to overcome the problem.

Bluebell Hill presently using: 46 - 24 - 27 - 42 - 39 - 45

From 27th June: 46 - 43 - 40(HD) - 45 - 39 - 54

If by the way this has happened, then go into your TV or boxes set up menu and turn off automatic channel updates.

I have a roof aerial with booster and powered splitter in loft to 5 tvs around the house. I retuned the 2 main TVs built in Freeview tuners yesterday 13th. 1 tv has lost all it's HD channels I.e. there are no channels now from 50 to I think 59, I was hoping to watch the tennis on BBC HD. Had tried the reset you suggest but no good.
I should get London but the signal is blocked by tall flats so pointed to Bluebell hill (should I be on Dover? SS95YQ is my post code). HD was poor before switchover but now it's gone grrrr.. Will this get sorted on 27th? The other TV is pixelating more than it did b4 switchover.
I guess they are maybe playing/testing outputs for a while till they get the optimum levels between transmitters. Could it be the Anglian signal coming of the back of my Ariel knocking the singnal out?

Adrian Bance: I had also meant to include, that because of your relatively close proximity to Bluebell Hill your signal could be excessively high and that will cause your TV or box to give false indications, so if you have access to a set top aerial then try a test using that, remembering that its only the BBC thats presently on high power, but if this does improve the situation then you will require an attenuator to be placed in line with your aerial socket, as the situation will get worse come the 27th.

We have converted our garage into a den . Before the switchover the TV worked fine with an indoor aerial and a free view box - no problems at all. Since the switchover we get no signal at all. We have tried another freeview box which we have in our bedroom which works perfectly and this one also gave no signal - Can you offer any help please

Carol Golding: It is impossible to give a very specific answer as to what to try without knowledge of your location so as the likelihood of reception may be checked upon.

The thing that springs to mind here is that it would probably be better to extend the fixed roof-top aerial that you have (if you have one) to serve the "den" as well. This would irradicate any intermittant reception, as set-top aerials really aren't the best as they are in an environment where the signal isn't the best.

Tony: HD is not broadcast from Bluebell Hill or Dover before switchover. Both these will complete switchover on 27th when their HD multiplexes will come on air.

Looking at the predictor, Rouncefall is roughly off the back of your aerial and its HD channel is C47, so you could try manually tuning to it until 27th. I don't have first-hand experience of HD receivers, but I understand that when manually tuning some, such as Humax, you have to specify DVB-T2 mode, which is that used by Freeview HD broadcasts. If you don't then it probably defaults to DVB-T which is what Freeview standard definition services use.

I suggest that you use the booster if it can be seen to be of benefit. With digital reception you need enough signal to be above the threshold for your TV to resolve a picture. Signal levels vary over time, e.g. due to the weather, so the signal level needs to be high enough above so that any drop won't put it below. Where this is the case, then the expected result is that reception (availability of channels) will be hit and miss.

The signals after switchover are stronger, so after 27th try removing your mast-head amp. You may also try Dover.

What you aerial is best suited to depends on its type. Bluebell Hill will be all Group B, except for ArqB which will be just outside, so a Group B aerial will probably work. Dover is C/D. Crystal Palace is Group A. If your aerial is a wideband then it will work for all, although wideband yagis aren't as sensitive on Group A channels. If you want to know more about this, see ATV's site www.aerialsandtv.com

In particular these may be of interest:

Aerials, TV Aerial and Digital Aerial
Gain (curves), Again
Television Aerial Boosters / Amplifiers, Splitters, Diplexers & Triplexers
Bluebell Hill Transmitter
Crystal Palace Transmitter

Check that your receiver is tuned to the desired transmitter as sometimes they don't. There are six multiplexes after switchover and one service from each is: BBC One, ITV1, BBC One HD, ITV3, Pick TV and Yesterday. Check the signal strength screen to see that each are tuned to the correct UHF channels for your chosen transmitter.

hi, I use a hitachi hdb65 set top box which is suddenly displaying the dreaded "no signal".I have a rooftop aerial, and landlord also gave me a amplifier(?), which looks like a laptop charger and plugs into the socket and power supply.wonder if the amp thingy could be the problem?

caroline: With your aerial connected directly into your box go into its installation menu / manual search and enter Ch23 into the box, then without pressing anything note if there is any indications of a signal showing on the strength / quality bar at the bottom, if not then change Ch23 to Ch52 and note if anything shows.

If still no success, then try and get a piece of ordinary wire of about 18" or so minimum and connect that into the inner part of the boxes aerial socket and try the same two tests again, giving an update on results.
