Updated - changes to Freeview channel numbers this week on September 19th 2012
As an update to the original plan (see Freeview channel numbers change on September 19th 2012) - the changes to Freeview this week will now be less extensive than planned, as two channels have appealed the changes.
The main changes are shown in this diagram below. You will need to do a "first time installation" to ensure the channel numbers are correct. See My Freeview box has no EPG ... or the channel line up is wrong if you don't know what to do. Another option is the list of retune instruction leaflets and manuals on the Freeview Retune - list of manuals page.
The changes are now:
- Dave and Yesterday swap over to 12 and 19
- Really and Gold (subscription) swap over to be 17 and 20
- The Food Network moves to 48 (from 49)
- The Jewellery channel moves to 49 (from 60)
- Local TV services are reserved 8 (England and Northern Ireland) and 45 (Wales and Scotland)
- RTE1, RTE2 and TG4 are reserved 51, 52 and 53 - these start on a special "mini multiplex" for Northern Ireland on Wednesday 24th October 2012.
- Argos TV starts on 55
- Text services move to 200-224: 200 BBC Red Button; 201 Teletext Holidays; 202 Rabbit; 203 Gay Rabbit; 204 1-2-1 Dating; 205 Mail Travel; 206 Sky Text.
- MHEG services move to 225-299: 225 VISION; 226 CCTV; 227 Sports Tonight; 228 Connect 1; 229 Connect 2; 230 Connect 3; 231 Racing TV; 232 The Space.
HD channels move to 101-120 The "normal" order of channels is restored to HD: 101 BBC One HD; 102 BBC HD; 103 ITV1 HD or STV HD or UTV HD; 104 Channel 4 HD; 105 S4C Cirlun. - (Not 100% sure this is confirmed)
Help with Television sets?

Andy: As the messages advising to retune are being broadcast on the Public Service channels, they will appear on Lite transmitters as they simply relay what they receive over the air from their parent.
PS: As you know, due to the nature of the area, reception from anything other than the local PSB-only relay is possible in most parts. The only other possibility is where reception from a full-service transmitter is possible. If this is of another region, such as Winter Hill, then a two-aerial approach may provide the Commercial channels along with the correct regional programming.

Everything was fine until I did the reset & retune yesterday. Now I have lost Dave, The Food Network & Challenge TV but have gained channels I didn't even want like Argos TV. Thanks a lot!! My Freeview box has turned into a useless brick overnight! Postcode LU5 4RQ.

Shane Finch: The services you mention are carried on the COM5/ArqA multiplex. If you receiver has manual tuning, then try manually tuning to it.
Manualling tune to UHF channel 52 if your aerial points to Sandy Heath which is a bit clockwise of north.
If your aerial points towards Crystal Palace, which is south east, then manually tune to C22.

I had this nightmare this week too. The only sure way is to do a complete reset (factory reset) of your equipment to remove all the channels (some equipment will remove all channels when retuning without doing this) and then do a Manual Retune of just the 6 channels you need (you don't need the HD channel if you don't use HD). If you search this site for the transmitter you are using you can find the channel numbers you require. My PVR picked up duplicate channels which made it unusable.

19 Sep has been and gone. Yesterday is still on 12. I have done a retune and Yesterday is still on 12. Are you sure it is not due to happen in 2013? I am on the Sheffield transmitter

May only be on certain areas perhaps Cliff; we're on Sandy Heath transmitter in East Anglia.
However it does no harm to do a retune every now and then as long as you don't pick up and save duplicate programs on extra channels from other regions; then it's not such a good idea.

Marie, most TVs and PVR boxes ask you if you want to save the channels before you go back to watching them.
You need to check your instruction book. If they don't ask you to 'save' then it's normally done automatically.
If you haven't got the user guide then you can find most of them online as pdf files to download.
If you still have problems let us know the make and model number of the unit and I'll try and find out. Mike.

Dave Lindsay: My AOC TV has been retuned a number of times now since the 19th and it always puts ITV1 at channel 800. Can't move or change the channel listing on this TV. Not even sure if it can get a Firmware upgrade from somewhere.
My channel numbering starts at:-
1, 2, 7, 9, etc.
Cheers anyway.

Bill: Ensure that the country setting is set correctly if there is one. A different country setting can produce unexpected results with regards to logical channel numbering.
Perhaps (i.e. if all else fails) you may have to carry a factory reset (or whatever it's called). The thinking being that there "could" be some remnant of a previous tune.
It may be interesting to find out what happens when only PSB2 multiplex (the one that carries ITV1, C4 etc) is tuned. Do the service go onto the correct logical channel numbers? Manual tuning may be useful here.
If there is no manual tuning it may give the UHF channel numbers as it scans them and you may be able to be quick to plug in and unplug the aerial on the target channel. If it only gives a percentage, then the scan runs channels 21 to 69 which means that a rough calculation can be made.
This is something that you might want to try. I'm not sure how likely it might yield success.
I'm not an RF professional, so these are some things that I would be looking to try.
