Dave, thanks for your detailed reply, it was very helpful!
As you suggested, I had a look at the signal strength screen for ITV3 and it is indeed tuned to C27, which is Pendle Hill. ITV3 was pixellated quite a bit at the time which adds further evidence to your theory!
So presumably, before the Olympics, we were getting COMs 5 and 6 through Pendle Hill, although I have no idea why a retune before the Olympics caused us to lose them.
I had a look at manually retuning to get the missing channels. The aerial runs through the Humax, so I guess I'd need to retune that first. It looks like I'd need to be physically on those channels to manually retune them, but on the Humax, if you don't receive a missing channel, you can't actually get on to the right number (e.g. to get Film 4 I'd need to be on channel 15 but the Humax will only allow you to access 14 and 16, even if you're using the 'next channel' button). so it looks like it's impossible to get them back. Any suggestions welcome :)

Andrew Haddow: There is no requirement to tune the Humax before the TV, even though it is daisy-chained on the aerial feed it doesn't work that way.
Also, in order to manually tune, you do not need to go to the logical channel number (LCN) of one of the services on the multiplex. So you do not need to switch to LCN15 before attempting a manual tune to C24. You go to the manual tune screen and select/enter the desired UHF channel, it will scan and find the services that are being received The services' designated LCNs are broadcast over the air and so they assume their correct positions as a result of this.
The fact that you had COM5 and COM6 previously means that they were "found" when you ran the scan. It's not so much that they were lost when you retuned, but that they weren't found on the subsequent scan. This is because the retuning procedure must first delete all the channels that are stored before scanning/looking for those available.
Signals vary and particularly so in situations such as yours where you are on the fringes and using an aerial that doesn't point in the right direction. For this reason, your reception could be intermittent.
You will have to consult an aerial installer with a view to reception from either Winter Hill or Pendle Forest. You may wish to retain your current aerial on Darwen as a backup. It probably won't be suitable for reception from Winter Hill or Pendle Forest.
As you probably know, Darwen Moor at 200m above you is in the way of Winter Hill. It would appear that the high ground north of Belthorn is higher than the line of sight between you and the Pendle Forest transmitter, so it won't be a given.

Andrew Haddow: It might be worth seeing if the reception on the TV is any better by feeding the aerial directly into it.
The idea is that the signal coming out of the Humax is the same as that going in, but in practice it is not exact and in situations where the signal is touch and go the slight variation could play its part.
As ever, it's a "try it and see" sort of thing.

I live in North Devon-EX33 and have just bought a new Plasma t.v.Tonight i've noticed that both Film 4 AND I.T.V 4 have disappeared from my listings.I can receive both through my Sky dish and also on my old set in the bedroom but not on the set downstairs.Very confused.

Mike: I am guessing that your aerial is most likely pointing to Huntshaw Cross, in which case Mux ArqB which carries Film4/ITV4 is on C56+ If these channels are listed in the channel list, but do not give any reception when selected, it is possible that the mux from another transmitter (possibly Caradon Hill on C27-) was stored when scanning for channels, but the signal is below the reception threshold. If this is the case, or the mux was simply overlooked when scanning do a manual tune on C56. It might be necessary to clear the channel list completely by doing a factory reset, then manually tune the full set of frequencies for Huntshaw Cross (or whichever transmitter you are using) to give a full set of working channels.

Why am I unable to get the channels (such as Film on 4) in Dundee from the Craigkelly transmitter. When I do get them that are blocky and the sound is just sqeaks. Funnily when I tune into Film4 in the early morning, and the teleshopping is on, the signal is almost perfect. Also my new Sony Bravia shows a "no signal" message whereas other "simpler" tv's in the house get the broken picture described above. We have used the same aerial trained on Craigkelly for about 6 years and it was only sometime in 2011 that we lost Film4, etc., which till then were perfect. I have retuned all of the tv's numerous times but to no avail. We cant tune to the Forfar transmitter as we are on the wrong side of the hills North of Dundee, and the Taybridge transmitter doesn't carry the Film4 channel so turning aerial there wouldn't help. The roof mounted high gain aerial is (and always has been ) boosted through a mains power booster/distribution unit/ What should I do.

For a while now I've not been able to get Film 4, Yesterday or 4seven on our Set Top Box.
I did a retune, plus a manual retune (although I'm not quite sure that we put in the correct channel to search).
Is there anything that can fix it, or would I need a new box? I live in Sheffield, S5

Sarah: Assuming that your aerial points to the Crosspool transmitter, as all the aerials on your street appear to be, then you need to manually tune to C39 for COM6 which carries Film4 and Yesterday.
