Travel Channel and Film4+1 comes to Freeview, Film4 to Freeview Light
42 isn't just the Ultimate Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything, it is where you will now find the Travel Channel on Freeview, from 6pm-10pm.
Scripps Networks (who half own UKTV with the BBC) also broadcast the Food Network on Freeview.
Scripps Networks Jon Sichel told Broadcast "The launch on Freeview represents another milestone in the expansion strategy for Travel Channel as a world-class brand. We want to continue to build awareness of our award-winning content and global brands, and this trial block with Freeview is a great partnership that helps us fulfil that goal" (Travel Channel heads to Freeview Broadcast).
Scripps sister-channel Food Network is currently available via Freeview.

How are they fitting all these channels into the system? Are other channels closing down, is signal compression becoming more efficient or are they compressing channels more (at the same efficiency of compression)?

Charles Stuart: It's Moore's Law in action.
Today the computing power they use can fit nine streams into the PSB2 multiplex - all at full resolution.
As it makes no odds to the decoder, the viewer gets a better picture and more channels.

It does make a difference to the noise performance. A given size chunk of noise will expand more if the original signal is compressed more. If you have marginal reception you can expect interference to be bigger or last longer.
I have a MythTV system and have noticed while editing some recordings that keyframes are getting very far apart, up to 30 seconds during film titles. Not good if you have a splat or if you've just tuned to that channel

Briantist: so does this change to film 4 mean that every home will have to retune to keep receiving it ?

That would indeed be the case mazbar.
Good news for those inflicted with Freeview Light though.

It took years to get Channel 4, decades to get Channel 5 and with no warning or wait we now have Film4
with more HD channels to follow.
Done the retune and can't see any reduction in picture quality.
Now all they need to do is squeese in ITV3, ITV4, cITV etc.

P.S.
I still have The Spice but no Travel Channel.
Could never watch The Spice, as my receiver was not compatible.

Is Film 4 an extra channel on PSB2 or has it replaced one of the +1 channels?

Mick_Dawn: it's an extra stream. ITV+1 and c4+1 have better resolution too
