You need a "wideband" aerial rather than a high gain one (see all about aerials). Also, if you use a signal booster in the setup, this can cause problems with digital signals.

Can I suggest that you try the following:

1. Check that all the connectors are OK, in particular that there are no stray wires and that both the outer shield and inner wire are connected;

2. If you are using any signal boosters, turn them off;

3. Check to see if you have anything like a VCR connected via a UHF fly lead - sometimes these can changed to use channels such as 68.

4. If you have a wideband aerial, if you can try raising it up an additional metre;

T Harman: If you have a roof-top aerial which feeds another room, and it is pointing to Heathfield, as most aerials appear to do on your road, I suggest that you use it to tune the set into the transmitter.

Depending on which side of the road you are depends on whether reception from Heathfield is likely to be better at the front or back of the house.

Consider the direction to the transmitter, by observing other aerials. Then consider whether the line to the transmitter passes through lots of bricks and mortar. If it does then reduce this by moving the aerial and see if reception improves.

Hi, having lots of issues with trying to rig up an aerial so I can get freeview, getting rid of sky and saving money I hope once the aerial is sorted. I can only get 11 channels if I mount the aerial outside, ME13 8FF so I guess its bluebell hill, if I put it in the loft I get nothing at all. Also have an amplifier box in the loft, i assume its for the areial sockets in the house, getting to the end of my tether with this, any advice appreciated. Pete

pete: JB38 and David Lindsay are much more expert than me, so I'll leave them to comment on your reception problems, although Bluebell Hill isn't looking happy, according to the Digital UK checker.

My thought is, why are you using Freeview (which is obviously causing you problems), when you have a Sky dish already? If you have Sky plus, then you have 2 LNB's on your dish, so you could swap out your Sky box for Freesat. Can I stop paying Sky and use my satellite receiver to get Freeview ? | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice & Upgrading from Sky to Freesat

. Even if you don't have 2 LNB's, you can upgrade your dish without too much expense (in fact just go for quad). See Satcure.com for details.

Since your Sky box wont record any longer, your going to need a PVR, either Freeview or Freesat. Its about £250 new for a Humax Freesat PVR, but you can pick up the excellent Foxsat from Humax directly for £129 (graded). Thats easier than trying to get your aerial to work, and buying Freeview equipment which might not work that well where you are, for about the same price.

pete: indications are that you reside in an area whereby reception from any of the four main stations can be somewhat iffy, most of the aerials seen around your area being vertically mounted and facing towards the local Faversham PSB only station, the station you mentioned (Bluebell Hill) being indicated as only being able to provide variable reception on all of its six multiplexes and with the remaining stations offering a combination of the occasional good but with variable to poor being the norm.

Although further advice can certainly be given on this as reception predictions can have a wide margin of error, but considering the fact that you are already equipped with an operational satellite feed then why don't you just purchase a Freesat box and save yourself a load of hassle! as Freesat boxes are 100% compatible with Sky dish systems.

With regards to the Sky box, is it a Sky+ type or just a standard box?

Just bought lg tv with freeview hd but not receiving hd. My aerial goes first into an analogue DVD recorder then into the tv from there. Could this be the problem. Also have sky box connected.
