My Sky box has a "no signal message" - what do I do?

My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

This morning my Sky Bos suddenly said no satterlitte signal being received, tried all the various reboots that are recommended but to no avail. Rang Sky who said press the Power Button on top of the box to reset it,got a picture back but the remote would'nt work was told to remove the batteries and then press the select button and hold it down for about two minutes or so then replace the batteries apparently this resets the remote control. All worked after that, hope this helps.

catherine: ITV2 is on the same transponder as ITV4, and although its not known whether or not you are using a Freesat or Sky box but "if" its of the recording variety then swap the two leads from the dish over then (if a Sky box) disconnect it from mains supply followed by powering it back up again after 30 seconds or so and allowing it to search for listings, once completed check if ITV2 has returned.

If though its a Freesat box then carry out a fresh installation, this being the one where you have to enter the post code.

Further advice dependant on feedback

janet: By saying that your signal is not great then it all depends on your interpretation of what it should be, because both the strength and quality have to be around 55% minimum for reliable reception but preferably with the quality being higher than the strength.

If your Sat dish is on the porch then you should leave the Sky box on the signal check screen and get someone to press lightly on the left hand edge of the dish and then on the right whilst you note the changes in the levels being indicated, because when dishes are blown or knocked slightly out of alignment its usually always in the horizontal (left / right) plane.

patriciabedwell: What kind of receiver are you using;Sky+HD or Freesat? If you are using one of these receivers, your dish may have slipped out of alignment. If you are using a generic free-to-air non Sky or Freesat receiver you may need to do a retune.
