So far it doesn't look as though the Brighton (Whitehawk Hill) transmitter is going to be broadcasting BBC 4 HD or the News in HD - unless there is another channel up-date tonight.

John Clemence: It's not going to happen ever. Sorry.
As it says on the Whitehawk Hill (Brighton and Hove, England) transmitter | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice page
Are you trying to watch these 4 Freeview HD channels?
"The Whitehawk Hill (Brighton and Hove, England) mast is not one of the extended Freeview HD (COM7 and COM8) transmitters, it does not provide these high definition (HD) channels: Al Jazeera HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBeebies HD.
If you want to watch these HD channels, either use Freesat HD, or move your TV aerial must point to one of the 30 Full Freeview HD transmitters. For more information see the want to know which transmitters will carry extra Freeview HD? page."

Hm. When you buy HD free view kit nobody makes it clear that your local transmitter isn't actually ever(?) going to deliver the full service.
When I originally asked why BBC 3 would get HD first I was told (on this forum) it was because it had more viewers. Now I'm being told something different. Seems that my licence fee buys me less than other folks.

John Clemence: As has been said time and time again the licence fee only alows you to install TV equipment in your home it does NOT entitle you to a broadcast service, if you want lots of channels then get sat. or move to a full Freeview area !!!

Except that the BBC do get a goodly share of the licence fee to provide programming. But yes, I did know this. What I don't understand is why it will, as Brian says, 'its not going to happen ever'. Who decides this? Who can I write to?

John Clemence: In my opinion, "never" is a bit strong.
It is true that BBC Four HD isn't likely to be carried by Whitehawk Hill until 2019 at the earliest.
This is because the new HD multiplex was planned for until the end of 2018. After that, TV frequencies may be reorganised and perhaps these services will achieve better coverage.
The decision as far as the plan for the current HD multiplex has been taken. It uses limited frequencies and hardware equipment already in existance so as to keep the cost down.

Bracknell
I live in Bracknell and have so far been unable to get Freeview BBC FOUR HD. BBCs 1, 2, 3/CBBC and News 24 are all available here in HD, but even trying manual tunning of C33 570MHz, and getting a signal level reading varying from 8 to 10 on 1 to 10 scale of my Panasonic Blu-ray recorded, I get not even a 1 on the signal quality indicator. Does this mean that those living in Bracknell are not considered worthy of receiving BBC FOUR HD via Freeview?

Indeed, and having followed your kind advice, I find myself no better off regarding the matter of receiving BBC FOUR HD. Are there any plans for higher power output for C33 from Crystal Palace? The level currently in use does seem extremely meager compared to that powering the other BBC HD channels.

Just updated the channels on a neighbour's HD set. Similar situation, BBCs 1, 2, 3, CBBC and News 24 in HD, but not luck with BBC FOUR. Indeed, an attempt at manual tuning gave "No signal". It thus does look like we are out of range here for the underpowered Channel 33 from Crystal Palace.
