Marie Martin: Film4 is loud and clear in Derby. It might be worth checking that you still are tuned to C57 rather than a possible C39 from Sutton Coldfield if your receiver has been re-tuned recently. Otherwise check for single frequency interference from the RF modulator of a Sky box or VCR. Also try repositioning aerial and HDMI leads relative to the receiver in case there is any interaction with the tuner.

Sasha: If it is only ITV that gives problems check that the ITV you have stored on button 3 is the correct one for the transmitter that the aerial is pointing to. Check on the signal strength screen for signal strength and quality plus the UHF channel/frequency that is being received. How does this compare with say C4? Also look in the 800s of the channel list for any alternative ITV that works correctly.

Martyn Bell: The Digital UK postcode checker makes no prediction whatsoever for reception from Great Yarmouth at your location. Note that the frequencies are co-channel with Sudbury, which could be a factor with any possible reception from either transmitter being blocked by signals from the other. The only realistic alternative for the PSB channels only is Belmont, which could be subject to interference from the continent at times. Trying different locations and various heights for your Tacolneston aerial might offer an improvement to your current situation. However, providing you have no trees in the way, satellite reception could prove to be the only reliable signal source at your location.

Charles Wilson: Having checked the William Hepburn tropospheric ducting forecast for today, there is no indication whatsoever of inversion taking place, however at such times as this does take place out of area digital signals will interfere with your normal service as much if not more than analogue signals used to. There is of course the possibility of locally originating interference from the RF modulators of Sky boxes, VCRs or games consoles. It is also possible that engineering work is taking place to prepare for frequency changes later in the year on PSB2 and ArqB. Such work might not be notified, as much of the engineering information originates from the BBC and deals mostly with their own services.

Peter Henderson: I have seen reference to Cambret Hill being included in future plans, presumably as this is the only significant area with no general coverage of COM muxes. Regarding politicians showing an interest, the only transmitter I have heard of receiving particular attention was Milburn Muir in Scotland. As a low power relay with a serving a large number of viewers it would possibly have been a viable extension to the network, however as the proposals are to (possibly) make the COM muxes use a SFN in DVB-T2 in the not too distant future it is unlikely that further extensions to the network would be considered before then.

trevorjharris: The slot on PSB3 is possibly a relatively costly outlet for any broadcaster. No doubt the 10 site plan will be considered most attractive cost-wise, with the 20 site plan most desirable as it tips the coverage over the 50% mark. Whether another ten transmitters for 4% more viewers will be considered unattractive remains to be seen - or could the winning licence holder cherry pick and choose say Fenham, Fenton and Sheffield as worthwhile additions to the 20 site plan? Satellite, whilst having a signal which covers most areas is limited to serving those viewers with suitable receivers. As the majority of satellite viewers are subscribers to Sky it is not surprising that HD commercial channels choose to be subscription channels, in common with the practice in Germany where satellite viewing is more extensive.

Carol Hall: The William Hepburn Tropospheric ducting forecast shows that conditions are not currently those that cause interference from distant transmitters to occur through the inversion effect. As you are having problems on all channels it suggests that you could either be experiencing impulse interference from nearby electrical equipment or a faulty connection or there could be a problem with your aerial/cables. Try to observe the signal strength and quality on affected channels when reception is poor. Is the frequency being received the correct one for the transmitter to which the aerial is pointing? Try repositioning the aerial cable (and any HDMI cable) relative to the receiver in case there is any interaction. Also check the condition of cable and connectors and do a visual check that the aerial is still mounted in its correct position.

Wenvoe (Cardiff, Wales) Full Freeview transmitter
Thursday 7 February 2013 10:10PM

Nicola: The re-tune on the 23rd January 2013 affecting viewers to Wenvoe followed a change of frequency for ArqB, which carries Film4, ITV4, 4Music etc. If other channels which were working correctly prior to this date are now giving problems first check that the receiver has stored channels for the transmitter that the aerial is pointing to. Check the frequency for BBC1, ITV, ITV3, Sky News and ITV4 also noting the signal strength and quality if your tuner offers this information which is often found by pressing "display" or similar info button. For Wenvoe you should see 41, 44, 42, 45 and 39 respectively. Ridge Hill or Mendip are possible "wrong" transmitters that might have been found when scanning for channels. In the event that the wrong frequencies are stored you will need to do a factory reset to clear the memory of old data, then do a manual tune on the Wenvoe frequencies. Alternatively, do a scan for channels with the aerial plugged in for the Wenvoe frequencies (middle third of the scan), but unplugged for the unwanted transmitters.

Steve James: You are predicted to be able to receive from both Reigate and Crystal Palace transmitters, with good reception from whichever has the aerial directed to it. Check that the TV is tuned to the correct transmitter for the aerial. For CP, aerial set for horizontal polarisation, use C23, C26, C22, C25, C28 plus C30(HD). Reigate ,if your aerial is set for vertical polarisation uses C60, C57, C21, C24, C27 plus for HD C53.
