Freeview reception at NG7 2EF

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

David Chappell:

I suggest you use the Digital UK Coverage Checker, that is provided by the operators, at http://www.digitaluk.co.u…ker. Simply enter the full post code and a house number (if that is not available then enter a '1' instead). That will then show the available transmitters at the location given by the post code. That shows that reception is possible from either Charmouth or Stockland Hill. It also gives the direction to aim your aerial and the channels being used.

The unexplained always does come back! I had problems again today with Channel 56 and this time really dug into the problem. Mostly I was getting high signal level but minimal quality on c56 - odd and previously put down to interference or poor connections.

I now believe that what is happening is that my very local (1 1/2 miles) Aldeburgh Freeview Lite transmitter is overloading my TV and blocking reception of weak channels such as c56. I have an ultra high gain wide band aerial with a mast head preamp to get c56 from Tacolneston but I suspect it has a side lobe towards the local transmitter. Turning off the preamp improved c56 reception quality but made the signal so weak it was unreliable in that way. I have ordered an overlap blocking filter and hope this will do the trick. I doubt I am the only person to have this problem!

I am glad we seem to be making progress. You surmise that a side lobe of the very high gain aerial is receiving unwanted signals is quite likely. However, just turning off the amplifier tunrns it into a high loss attenuator wioth much reduced signal feed. It would be better to take it out of circuit, even if only temporarily, and coupling the two coaxial cable ends together with a coaxial coupler, very inexpensive, so the signal is fed through in full. Worth a try?

Yes - I did do that and I think the blocking is stopped but the c56 signal is now undesirably weak. It's a difficult balance. The filter should arrive today and that will be interesting to try. Annoyingly it's a DC blocker so I can't rely on the power from my Labgear distribution amp to power the mast head amp. Fortunately I have a separate power supply I can patch in.

Barry:

Such problems are NEVER with the transmitter else many hundred of thousands of viewers would also be affected but none are reporting any such problems, So it a problem with your system. You are 50km away from the Sandy Heath transmitter so you need to ensure that your aerial system is in good condition and operating correctly as well as checking that you are tuned to the correct transmitter. So check all your aerial cables and all coaxial plugs/sockets by unplugging, examining and refitting. That should clear any possible corrosion/oxidation on the contacts which is a well known problem. Also check that you are tuned to the correct trasnmitter for your aerial, look at the alignment of it and check that against the bearings given on the Digital UK Coverage Checker at http://www.digitaluk.co.u…ker.

Eamon:

Look at the Digital UK Coverage Checker for your location, see Coverage Checker - Detailed View That shows there are some inherent reception variabilities with the Horizontal signals from Rowridge. The vertical ones are not affected but that does not carry COM7 nor COM8.

It's worth checking all your aerial connections and cables, unplugging and refitting any coaxial plugs and sockets to clear any possible corrosion/oxidation. Also check that you are tuned to the correct channel numbers and have a wideband aerial in use.

Well, my Overlap Blocking Filter (a PROception proOBF1E) turned up yesterday but it seems to be defective! It is marked as having a Channel 39 to 60 passband but in reality channels below 30 come through strongly and channels 40 to 43 are entirely blocked (and these should be my PSB1 and 2 and COM4 channels!).

However, the problem on c56 is fixed so I think I'm on the right track. I plan to speak to the manufacturer tomorrow... Why is life so difficult?

Since yesterday, my main tv keeps squaring and then showing as no signal and I lose all the channels
I have retuned it twice.
Your post code checker shows that the aerial should point to London, which it does but, this TV shows Cambridge when I tune it. There are other TVs in the house which correctly show London
Can you help at all? Thanks
