Freeview reception at YO17 6RW

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

Marion:
Checking the Reception Map does not show any 4G masts at all and that service is not due to start until at least the end of August 2013 and that will be mainly in urban areas initially.
The map does suggest that you are in an area of poor reception and we would need more details of location (a good post code helps) and the equipment and aerial(s) in use for contributors to this site to help more.

I have been trying to set up Freeview for a friend who lives in the village of Garway at HR2 8RJ 51d 53' 57" N 2d 47' 42" W. This location is outside the service area of both Ridge Hill and Mendip with the terrain plot for both transmitters showing hills in the way.
Surprisingly I have been able to receive some multiplexes from Ridge Hill and others from Mendip - although none with decent continuous quality.
Is there any local relay that will give a better service or should I resort to Freesat?

Clive Porter: I would suspect that your best option is to put a dish up and get a Freesat box.

The Freesat service is specifically made for locations such as this.

Andy Gritt: If you are connected into a communal aerial system then check if others are similarly affected, if though you are using your own aerial system and you have any type of booster in line then check that its still powered up, although even if it is try bypassing it by connecting the aerial directly into the coax that goes to your TV (or box) just in case the booster has developed a fault.

I have recently moved address to Fort Stamford Country Club, PL9 9TU. The transmitters available are Caradon Hill or Plympton, What are group W aerials and are they recommended for my location. Secondly will the close proximity of mobile phone masts to the rear of my location cause any tv reception problems

Alastair:
Which direction is your current aerial pointing? Plympton is South East of your location, see the Reception map, and it uses channels in the 40s/50s so a group K might be better than a Group W. If you are aiming at Caradon Hill then a Group A or Group K should suit.
Group W aerials are designated as Wide Band, suggesting they cover channels 21 to 68. But they are not so good in the lower channels (Caradon Hill?).

It is hoped that only 4G transmissions might affect only some Freeview services and hopefully only some in the higher channels, those closer to Channel 60. It does not appear that 4G will be available in you area as yet, so it is somewhat unlikely that you will be affected and it might only affect some Plympton services - if at all. If you are likely to be affected then @800 will send you 1 free filter that should resolve the possible problems. Fit it between your aerial and the first piece of equipment. 4G is not due to start until 29th August at the earliest, and then only in 20 selected major cities.

Alastair Robertson:
Thanks Mike for the quick response. My aerial is currently pointing at the Plympton transmitter, the reason I asked the question is that the web site www.digitaltvaerialsandsatellite.co.uk/digital_tv_aerial_groups suggests Group W aerials for both Caradon Hill and Plympton for my location

Alastair Robertson: Without necessarily disagreeing with that already said by Mike P, but according to the terrain indicator you would appear to have a clear line-of-sight between your location and the two stations in question, trees or man made objects excluded, and so when taking this into account as well as the "high end" final channel spread that both stations will be using (Caradon OK but Plympton using Ch58) I would not hesitate fitting such as a Log 36 as seen on the link, this new version of Log designed to restrict the effect of any 4G activity should that apply in any area, and this used in conjunction with the filter mentioned by Mike P would give absolutely maximum protection, although there is an element of over hype around about this potential problem.
