My Sky box has a no signal message - what do I do?
published on UK Free TV

If you are getting the message "no signal" this would indicate that there is a problem with the signal from your dish into your box. Even without a card inserted into a Sky Digibox, if there is a signal, you will always get Sky Guide and the free channels.

Try powering off your box, remove the card, check carefully the cables, especially the connection to the dish, reapply the power and then when asked to insert your card you should then be able to see (for example) Sky News on 501 and the BBC News channel on 503.

Once you can see any channel, reinsert your card. This should, after about one minute, give you the channels you expect, such as 103, 104 and 105.

There are three ways you can attempt to reset your box. Please see What can my do when my Sky Digibox says 'No Signal' ?.

If you continue to get "No signal", you dish may have been misaligned, or there may be a fault with the cables and connectors, or a problem with the Digibox. You can see the signal strength by pressing SERVICES, then 4-SYSTEM SETUP and 6-SIGNAL STRENGTH.

Helena Cairns : Should you be referring to a Sky box? and have tried everything mentioned in the heading of this page, then there really isn't left to try, as your problem is either being caused by (1) the dish having moved slightly out of alignment e.g: blown by high winds, (2) failure of the LNB which is mounted on the end of the dish arm, (3) damage to the "external" section of the coax, or finally (4) the actual box having failed, the cause of nearly always associated with its internal power supply.

Therefore, the only way of determining which of the aforementioned applies, is either by trying your box out on someone elses dish system, or alternatively have them try their box on yours, if their box works OK on your dish then your box is defective.

Calne

my daugher has just moved in to a rented cottage in Calne, Wiltshire, (post code SN119PG). just got a Samsung TV and reception is sub-standard. She can't get BBC1 channel 1 at all and the BBC 1 & 2, 101 & 102 High-def channels frequently break up. It seems to me from your coverage maps that she should be able to get satisfactory reception, so I think it must be an aerial problem. She says it looks like an old one, probably been up for years. She described it as looking like an 8 element aerial.
Any opinion would be welcome.

Mike

Mike O'Sullivan:
Many parts of Calne are served by a local transmitter close to John Bentley School. It does not provide all the services, it being a 'Freeview Lite' transmitter. Look at Calne (Wiltshire, England) Freeview Light transmitter | UK Free TV to see a coverage map and the available TV/radio services from this source.

If, however, your daughter lives outside the coverage area, she may be able to get signals directly from the Mendip main transmitter - all depends on where she lives.

You mention an 8 element aerial. If the rods are vertical it is most likely pointing towards the Calne transmitter. The fact that it may have been there a few years is not a reason to change it unless it is proven to have become faulty - a fairly rare occurrence.

I used to live near Calne so know it quite well and a Post Code would help to identify her location to see if she might get Mendip or have to stay with Calne and not get HD or commercial programmes as yet.

John Beardsworth: This type of problem is, in most cases, associated with the dish, such as it being intermittently obstructed by vegetation like a branch of a tree / bush etc.

Should this not be applicable, then another possible reason is water having crept into the "F" connector(s) that couples the coax into the LNB mounted on the end of the dish arm.

You should also unscrew the "F" connector on the rear of the box, checking the coax entering said connector for soundness and that it has not slackened off.

Finally, carry out a signal check on the box, making sure that the strength is at least around 60%, and with the quality also being around that figure and never under, as if it is, then this is an indication that the dish requires slight realignment, and which is nearly always in the horizontal (L/R) plane.

Further advice can be given provided that the model number, or type (standard or Sky+) of the box being used is supplied, plus info of whether or not you are connected into your own dish? or possibly a communal dish system?

Thanks for the reply MikeP. She did say that the aerial seems rusty. I thought corrosion as a likely cause.

I gave the post code, it's SN119PG

Mike O'Sullivan: I think that the relay transmitter in Calne, mentioned by MikeP, doesn't serve your daughter, and that she is in fact in an area served by Mendip.

A terrain plot would suggest that there might be clear line-of-sight at 27 miles, obstructions on the ground excepted:

Terrain between ( m a.g.l.) and (antenna m a.g.l.) - Optimising UK DTT Freeview and Radio aerial location

The yellow line is between the receiving aerial and transmitter. The area between the yellow line and pink line is the first Fresnel Zone and anything within it could potentially cause issues with reception.

Thus, anything on the ground up to 2 miles out could cause difficulty. This is anywhere up to Bowden Hill. Along this line there are many trees, and trees change by growing and moving, so reception could be difficult and potentially variable. Click "View a map of area..." below the plot to see the line between the two points.
