My ITV/C4 Freeview channels have disappeared - what can I do? Is it my SCART ca
It is a feature of television signals that they can be effected by the weather. Aside from the obvious damaged that can be caused by wind or torrential rain, the onset of summer can cause a more intriguing problem called "inversion".
Basically, when the sun heats up the land, the hot air can get trapped below cold air at high level. This creates an "inversion layer" which acts like a polished mirror to TV signals. This causes two problems: you can receive both the original and a reflected signal from your own transmitter (on analogue TV this appears as "ghosting") or interference from TV transmitters that are normally too far distant.
The ITV/C4 multiplex of channels (ITV-1, ITV-2, ITV-3, ITV-4, CITV, C4, More4, E4, Quizcall) use a transmission "mode" called 64QAM, and it is sadly much more prone to these problems.
So, whilst a loft-mounted aerial will provide reception at some time, it will fail at others. The only real solution is to mount the aerial (or a new Class I aerial) outside on a pole, but some people report that changing the cable from the aerial to the set-top box to the high-grade satellite cable can also help.
The SCART connection, by the way, only carries a single TV picture, not the Freeview transmission multiplexes, so if this is disconnected it will result in degradation to every channel at once.
I had to re tune today, weather very wet and windy. Only came back with 22 channels BBC a and b multiplex. Postcode sr7, roof mounted digital aerial, with internal booster. I used to receive all channels.

Chris Mileham: I am unsure as to how the weather can affect your receiver as it should be indoors. What was the reason for a retune?
SR7 is a very large area over which reception possibilities vary. However, across that area Pontop Pike is the most used full-service transmitter, so I shall assume that it is that which you are receiving from in the absence of knowledge of which transmitter your aerial is pointing to.
Refer to the page for Pontop Pike (County Durham, England) transmitter | ukfree.tv - 11 years of independent, free digital TV advice and at the top you will see it says Digital TV is "liable to interruption" - so there are ongoing engineering works.

Plymouth
HI I live in Plymouth Devon PL3 6SS
I have a relatively new Toshiba flat screen digital which was showing ITV1 but the next day we could not get it at all.
All the other channels have a great picture ,we have tried a auto re- tune but manual re tuning will not let us go below ch 21.
All cables seem to be ok as the picture is great on other channels
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers Trev

Trevor Martin: ITV1 on the Caradon Hill transmitter is on C25, this station seemingly used fror reception in your area due to the signal from the relatively local Plympton transmitter being completely blocked close to your location.

Trevor Martin: By the way, you cannot manually tune in individual "programme" channel numbers into a Freeview TV as its the "multiplex" channel number that carries them that you tune in, this in your case being Carradons muxC25 which not only carries ITV1 but also Ch4 / Ch5 / ITV4 etc, etc.

I have a Tosheba with built in Freeview.
Up until last Friday we were receiving all channels & and a good picture however since sunday past we are unable to receive ITV1 our transmitter seems to be Clarendon Hill mux C25.

Trevor Martin: I have already replied to this question yesterday at 08.40PM and which you had made under a different heading, this being seen by opening the undermentioned link.
However, in addition to that said, if manually tuning Caradon's C25 does not resolve the problem then carry out a "factory reset" on your TV followed by an auto-tune, this also known as "default setting", "first time installation" or a similar sounding term.

Hi,
Is there really no solution to losing the ITV/C4/E4 etc freeview channels due to high pressure weather? I've retuned and will do a factory reset of the box as well, but am not hugely confident it will work.
