To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Chris.SE: I have now established that BBC Four HD, BBC News HD and PBS America +One are receivable rather poorly at my location from Crystal Palace COM7. I guess it now means several hours going up and down into the loft to try to get a better/acceptable/functioning COM7 signal.
I only discovered the signal was partially present by MANUAL tuning @ 746MHz.
Possibly you people who give advice might bear in mind that manual tuning reveals things an aerial-out MEGA First time installation tune may not?
Wish me luck with my compass.

Ah, good, glad you've made some progress. Don't forget sometimes the best signal can be obtained when you are slightly off-bearing. Also it's not just bearing that can be relevant with a loft aerial, a bit backwards or forwards can make a difference, especially if you are trying to minimise multipath from structures as well as trees. Good luck with further manoeuvres!

I find this very informative but for whatever reason I unable to tune in Birmingham TV on either my F/V Box or Smart Television, I live in Wombourne and am tuned into Wrekin. Might this be the problem?

Mac Fletcher: The Birmingham local TV station is not broadcast from the Wrekin transmitter. If you provide a full postcode we can check whether you might be able to receive it from another transmitter.

As StevensOnln1 says, a full postcode is needed to look at predicted reception. Sometimes aerials successfully receive signals off side-lobes and to the rear of an aerial. You could try a manual tune of UHF channel 40 which the one used for the Local Multiplex from Sutton Coldfield. The signal is beamed in ~ a WSW direction AFAIK and you may just be on the edge of it.

Many people in Aberfelddy ,Weem and surrounding area are suffering intermitent break up of picture and sound on Freeview. IT affects all my BBC channels and has been. doing so for weeks..The signal comes from theKenmore transmitter. It is infuriating especially as I am about to pay for my BBC TV llicence this week as I am 79 years old and no longer am eligible for it free. I will be paying for channels I cannot watch !

Charlotte Smith:

Neither Freeview nor the BBC are currently reporting any transmitter problems or any within the last 5 days. On the assumption that your postcode is PH15 2LD you are predicted to get good coverage of the 3 main Public Service Broadcast multiplexes, which should give you reception of all BBC Channels and all main ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 channels, and also BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel4, Channel5 & BBC Scotland in HD if your receiver can get HD transmissions (needs an HD/T2 tuner) programmes are on 101-105 & 108 in your EPG (guide).

Occasionally weather conditions can cause reception difficulties, there has been some "Tropospheric Ducting" around intermittently of late affecting different parts of the country differently at various times so this may have had an effect. (In the old days of Black & White TV it was often called "Continental Interference").

The Kenmore transmitter is a relay transmitter from the main Angus transmitter and some weak signals from the Angus transmitter may be possible and if for some reason your set has become tuned to the channels for that transmitter (or another one!) then you and others may get these intermittent problems. In your TV's tuning section check that it's correctly tuned to UHF channels 23, 26, & 29 for the Kenmore transmitter.
If you are still having problems post back.

PS. You should not be paying for a TV Licence until you have received an official letter from TV Licencing telling how and when to pay (the one you may have had a couple of months ago is not the one).

Roz Goodey: No one can answer that as you haven't told us where you are or which transmitter you're receiving. Please provide a full postcode. It would also be worth checking for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV, but do not attempt to retune.
