My Freeview box has no EPG, is blank on FIVE, ITV3, ITV4, ITV2+1, has no sound o

To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:
Try this:
1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;
2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;
3) wait 30 seconds;
4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;
5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;
6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;
7) do a complete scan for channels again.
The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Hi Mike,
Many thanks for your help. Whilst I was looking up the manual you suggested I thought I'd just reset the box one more time. This time it did tune the BBC1,2 etc channels, although the signal is very week and intermittent. Its as though i get every 4th or 5th frame. Other channels ie ITV etc are fine. Any ideas other than return the box?
I bought it through Amazon, I have been referred to a firm for support so think I can get some but due to work it won't be easy to do it in the day
time.
Any further pointers would be welcomed.

About a week ago I had to totally strip the lounge ( new carpet ! ) which obviously meant removing, then returning, tv / gramaphone / pvr etc. On reinstalling the pvr I get the message " Cannot record, signal is too weak ". I have TWO roof aerials, both less than 4 years old ( replaced following a lighting strike, one receiving Hannington, one receiving ( I think ) Crstal Palace. The machine is a Sharp TU-R160, again about 4 years old. Reception via the TU-160 tuner is perfect, no pixellation, and I have checked and remade all coax connections. Any ideas before I throw a potentially usable piece of kit away? postcode is RG4 9QL.

Have carried out the channel clearing procedure as above and my reception has improved greatly, thank you. But I still get the occasional blank screen & horizontal interference, my suspicion is that my Grundig GDT 1500T is not able to deal with the strength of the digital signal, manual retuning can get 8K but this returns to 2K when switched off, any comments are helpful.

is this due to reduced power

alex: I take it your loft aerial has been mounted vertically? (elements top to bottom) and that it isn't mounted where its facing into a water tank, as although loft aerials can be perfectly satisfactory in many locations they are more vulnerable to being affected by their surroundings.
Another aspect that should be kept in mind is that the transmitter output is restricted towards the South West of the transmitter, this mentioned should it apply as you haven't given an exact location.

Hello. I have a technika tv with built in freeview. I stay in a rented flat and had a tv point put in two weeks ago by the landlord. When I came in all the channels were tuned and working, however since the day after I have been losing channels, mostly the BBC channel and the other ones broadcast on those bands. Usually resetting as instructed solved the problem but tonight I can only get the 10 channels that come on the ITV/channel 4 band and nothing else! (well rabbit and gay rabbit are there!!) I've tried resetting but to no avail, sometimes I get up to 20 channels but never the BBC ones tonight. :-( if I go to manually tune I am getting no signal on channels: 21, and 31- 68. And the ones I do get vary and also vary on the 'quality' indicator. I've tried moving my mobile out the room and the other other appliance running is a small fridge freezer on the other side of the room. I stay in Dumfries and my postcode is dg1 2rq.
If anyone could offer any help I would really appreciate it. I really fought with the landlord to get the tv point put in so am saddened I can't see many channels!
Thanks in advance.

My main transmitter is Sudbury and since the weekend I am getting a very blurred BBC 1 and BBC 2 (these were fine after 1st stage (7th July).
This only appears to be affecting my main TV as another one seems all OK.
I have reset twice now and no change. All other channels appear to be fine.
Can you please advise ?

SJ: 'Blurring' can be a sign that the receiver is on the verge of being unable to correct all the errors in the signal. Since it's just started happening, my guess is that this is due to too much signal, which is causing distortion. If you have a booster, you should remove it now, or turn it down if you lose channels when you remove it. If not, consider adding an attenuator.

James Quinn: Simply because Penicuik is what's known as a Freeview light transmitter by only having three Mux channels, Ch54 - Ch49 - Ch58, the latter being the HD service.
If you have good reception of the Mux channels mentioned (first two if not using HD) then that's all that will be available, this due more to what commercial interests were willing to pay for rather than anything else, Freesat being the only option for a better selection of programmes.
The trade predictor shows reception possibilities from other transmitters, but personal knowledge of Penicuik's location makes what's seen rather fanciful to say the least! (Durris - Aberdeenshire)

James Quinn: As jb38 says you might struggle to find a usable signal from any alternative transmitter. It is worth mentioning however that poor reception from Black Hill is predicted for a number of postcodes around Penicuik, if you are able to receive signals from B/H you should use a good quality group B receiving aerial set for horizontal polarisation.

Hi
Quick question - I have 3 freeview TV's (one Panasonic, one Philips and one LG)in the house, all connected to the same aerial on the roof. All TV's are picking up all channels with no problems but only one TV (Philips) will pick up the EPG. I've tried retuning etc but nothing works, the channel listing remains stubbornly blank. I live in HP14. Help would be much appreciated!

mark: Plugging devices into any of the TV sockets should have no effect whatsoever on the signal strength being received, "unless" that is that either the cable going into the TV's aerial plug / socket is loose and is being disturbed by any slight movement of the TV, or that there is serious deficiencies with your aerial system, this is being unknown.
You are only 1 mile from the Brierley hill transmitter and in theory should be receiving a good signal "if" your aerial is pointing to it, BBC being on Mux Ch68 and ITV1 etc on Mux Ch65, your aerial being mounted vertically, have a check on this via your TV's tuning menu.
Also have a check up in the 800 ranges of channels, as you might find better reception from some of the channels up there, if you do check what Mux (not EPG) channel numbers they show as, which may well be Brierley Hill.

Some other channels, like Channel 5 and other ITV channels are doing it too, but less severe. No problems with BBC channels. John Persijn: According to the Digital UK postcode checker you are predicted to have excellent reception from Malvern on Mux2 which carries C4 as well as ITV1 and C5. You are also shown as having good reception for these channels from Lark Stoke, but that is with the aerial pointing at Lark Stoke! Check that the channels you have stored are on the Malvern frequency, ie C39 or 618.0MHz. If you have stored Lark Stoke channels by mistake these will be received on C23. Otherwise make sure there is no nearby VCR or Sky box with the RF modulator set around C38 which could interfere with the Malvern signal. If you have trees in the signal path they can play havoc with reception on random frequencies. One last point, if you have any booster in use you could have too much signal, which gives similar results to having a weak signal or intermittent interference on affected frequencies.

victor michael minta: I assume you're using the Belmont transmitter - your aerial pointing north-east. So far, only the BBC channels have gone to high power - the other channels do so on the 17th. (Two multiplexes will remain on relatively low power until November.)
Digital UK's prediction is 99-100% across the board. This indicates high signal levels are expected. It's possible that you now have too much signal. If you have a booster or amplifier, try removing it or turning it down. If not, you could try adding an attenuator.
If your Freeview box is old - say before 2005 - it might not be compatible with the mode used after switchover. Check whether it's on the list at http://www.digitaluk.co.u…ment . There's another common fault of older equipment called 'Split NIT' - there is a list at http://www.digitaluk.co.u…tnit . These lists aren't complete, but if your box is on it, see the recommended actions there.
If you retuned very early on Wednesday morning, before 6am, they might not have finished making all the changes. In this case, if it was off-air at the time, your box may have tuned into fringe reception from another transmitter. Try doing another full reset.
Alternatively, if the aerial points south-west, you could be aiming at the Waltham transmitter. This does not start switchover until the 17th. If your box stores the first signal found, rather than the best quality, it may now be able to store Belmont BBC A when it couldn't before, but it's not strong enough to actually use. Check if you have another version of BBC One, Two etc in the programme guide at around 800. If that works, see Digital Region Overlap for some suggestions.

Robert: Services can come and go with no changes at the transmitter. Signal propogation - how it travels through the atmosphere - differs with the make-up of the atmosphere, its temperature and pressure. That's just normal propogation. At night, you also get reflections and refractions off different temperature layers in the atmosphere - which can cause signals to travel further - and with the right conditions signals can bounce between layers in the atmosphere, making them travel much further. The increased interference can cause your reception to drop out.
The change in propogation - which RF engineers call 'fading' - isn't always the same on all channels at the same time.
All that said: Digital UK's trade predictor takes account of expected degrees of fading and unusual propogation, both in the wanted signal and in unwanted distant signals, in their prediction. It also includes allowances for urban scatter and from woodland. It still predicts that 97% of locations, in the National Grid square that the centre of your postcode is located in, should have less than 1% failures over time, on Mux 2. It's usually considered quite conservative, though it doesn't know about individual trees or large buildings close to your location, only grid squares that contain a large chunk of urban area or woodland.
As I previously said, I think your cables may be damaged from exposure to UV light, rubbing over brickwork or tiles, or junction boxes permitting water ingress. Water changes the properties of the dielectric in the cable, which increases the losses at all frequencies, but greater at higher frequencies than lower. That's made reception marginal and more susceptible to outright failure when there is a greater degree of fading. You need sufficient margin of signal level to cope, without exceeding the combined signal level that will overdrive any amplification - including the receiver's automatic gain control - and cause distortion.
Given your business, I would recommend that you replace your current multiple aerials with a well-designed Master Antenna TV system, with levels of each multiplex adjusted separately and unwanted signals filtered out. Look for installers offering MATV/SMATV systems. (SMATV = Satellite + Master Antenna). Any such system will need to be retuned at switchover stages (14 and 28 September) and at any future retunes.
link to this comment |
10:03 PM
Linda: If you've just had a new aerial fitted, it's possible that you have too much gain. The Digital UK prediction is 100% across the board, which indicates very high signal levels. If you're using an amplifier or booster, try removing it. If that doesn't help, try adding an attenuator.
For suggestions on loft installs, see http://wrightsaerials.tv/….pdf and Loft and indoor aerial installations for TV, FM and DAB .
If it was fitted by a professional, I'd call him back to check the system.
The Pontop Pike transmitter uses Group C/D and always has done so, and will continue to do so after switchover, so unless there was a specific problem, there was really no need to change the aerial.

Roy Barrett: Just purely out of curiosity, knowing the Sleaford area I was just wondering if Belmont was preferred for any particular reason over Waltham? as although what KJM has stated is certainly perfectly correct full reception of all six Mux channels will only be from the latter date mentioned, as two Mux channels (Arq A - Ch53 from 17th & Arq B - Ch60 from 17th) are in the "poor" and unreliable category until then.
This in contrast with Waltham which already shows better coverage, and even more so come the end of this month, that is apart from Mux A/ SDN (Ch29) which wont be until the 12th October, albeit it presently isn't indicated in a lesser category other than good, which of course I fully appreciate that in reality might not quite be accurate as far as the Sleaford and district areas are concerned.

Hi all. Need to know I'm not going mad. (or maybe I am) This wee woman just came into my shop and was insistent that NVTV is now available on Freeview from Divis, and could I please record a programme onto DVD for here. I told her that this was not the case and that it was just on analogue Channel 62 which barely breaks trough the noise where I am situated. Am I wrong ? Are there any plans to put NVTV on Freeview ? Thanks in advance.

Brian Barron: howtoreceive only lists analogue, and various internet video sites. It isn't available on Freeview (it would appear on DMOL Pre-DSO Multiplex Channel Allocations if it were on one of the regular multiplexes, and the Manchester local multiplex is listed on DMOL Post-DSO Multiplex Channel Allocations ).
Because it's right up at C62, you're likely to need a wideband aerial, Divis uses mostly Group A except for Mux C on C48. (You also need a wideband for TG4, on C59.)
Ofcom list Restricted Television Service Licensees at Ofcom | Restricted television service licences , where they indicate that a digital service licence may be possible, though probably not until after DSO. One thing's for certain - they won't be staying on C62, that channel is being cleared for 4G mobiles. Now the main UTV-region plans have been published (25 May), it may be possible to plan the new location, although an RT multiplex (carrying at least RT One, RT Two, TV3 and TG4) is due to be fitted in somewhere as well.

Jane Stevens: Digital UK shows a very high 99-100% probability of reliable reception with a roof-top aerial. A well-sited loft aerial is still quite likely to give good reception.
If you have an amplifier, try it without - you really shouldn't need one at that distance.
If you've just retuned in order to pick up a new channel - I know 'Really' launched recently - your box may have picked up the wrong transmitter, particularly if you retuned in weather conditions that cause signals to travel further than usual.
Otherwise, I'd suspect that something is no longer connected - again, signals could still be strong enough for something to be detected even without the aerial. Check for any breaks in the cable, that the connector on the end is making good contact with the input on the TV or receiver, and that it's securely connected at the aerial.

I have retuned my freeview box but several stations just come up with a red dot in the middle of the screen, tried several times doing a reinstall etc, but still the same, the aerial is on the roof, tried tuning on another aerial but still the same.

I have just purchase a freeveiw+/DVD recorder set top box so i can receive digital tv through my analogue tv.I can only get the BBC channel mulitplex 1 and no others. i have disconnected everything and tuned with out th areal cleared the box and retuned and still the the same.In the kitchen i have a samll digital TV and at first the same was happening with that, then i disconnected it from the a dvd recorder , retuned and it picked up 41 programs. I also have a usb freeveiw receiver to convert my lap top to portable tv. I trie to tune that through kitchen aerial socket and no signal detected. i than when back into the room where the analogue tv is and freeview box is and used that areal socket and it found the 41 channels although some where broken up. I am pulling my hair out and this switch over seems to be getting more and more expensive. have you any suggestions?

BAZZER: A "red dot" was a common feature of one of the original ONdigital/ITV Digital boxes. If you have one of these, you will need to replace it - see TVs and boxes that do not support the 8k-mode | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .

Jen: If you have a device with an "RF output", you need to make sure that it does not clash with any of the frequencies used for Freeview reception.
You need to use a rooftop aerial to receive a reliable Freeview service, an indoor aerial is unsuitable.
Also, can you see Two frequency interference

I often get poor signal with broken or no picture/sound on channel 59 ' it is especially bad now 11/08/2011 @ 6:30 pm. Other channels seem ok. Postcode is cw4 7jb, aerial is pointing almost North, towards Winter Hill tx
My Digi Box is a Humax 9300T
Strangely, reception on my Philips Television seems ok

To boost or not to boost that is the question. I have read a lot about this and I am frankly confused, because the conventional wisdom seems to be to not use a booster, and yet when I turn mine off my letting rooms lose their signal.

8:53 PM
Robert: Speaking from the viewpoint of an engineer I can tell you that a booster "is" very necessary in lots of locations, maybe even more so than in pure analogue days.
This is basically because analogue can be received / viewed right down to where the picture disappears into the speckles, whereas with digital unless the signal is kept at a reasonable level above the cut off threshold, known as the "digital cliff", the picture will be prone to constant glitches, or disappear altogether!
The only time boosters should be used with caution is in higher signal strength areas where some of the multiplexes are transmitting on lower power than the rest, as striking a happy balance between boosting the lower signal but not overdoing the already powerful one is a bit hit and miss, as signals can constantly vary in strength.
In other words, the advisability of using one is totally dependant on the circumstances of each particular situation!

jb38, thank you for that, I note you are an engineer, could you therefore perhaps offer your view of the possible cause of the way that MUX 2 stations seem to randomly disappear from the Oxford transmitter.
We are constantly told it is anything but the transmitter, and yet the mux reappears without any alteration of my systems and I suspect it is the same with others.

I have a new tv with freeview, however, so I can use a video recorder I am using a freeview box. On my old tv the reception through the box was generally ok with occasional losses. With the new tv (purchased May 11) it was similar until a few weeks ago when the Sudbuty transmitter was changed. Since then I am unable to receive freeview without a buaaing noise, (occasionally get it ok, but very rarely). The picture mostly is fine with very little breaking up, and all channels are loading ok.The past few days there has been no sound at all. I have tried retuning on several occasions, but it does not resolve the porblem. On retuning there is a buzzing noise whilst searching for channels which was not there before. I have a internal booster, and an external roof aerial. The is a second TV, the main is also a new set with freeview, but is mainly used with sky. The freeview reception on that is perfect. It is plugged into the main aerial socket. The problem tv is in another room using an extension areial lead. The tv functions ok on analogue and the box works ok (we have used it at another location to test). IS the signal strength likely to increase after switchover in november? I am located in Lowestoft NR33 8RR

Robert: Well the cause of this really touches on what I mentioned about reception threshold levels, as anytime the Mux station referred to drops out and you carry out a signal check on the Mux channel concerned (Ch68) you will no doubt see that the signal is actually still there, but at a level obviously below your receiving devices capability of resolving a picture, these levels being something which can vary between different brands of sets, insomuch that one "sensitive" device might well show a picture where another lesser sensitivity type wont, this being where a booster can sometimes help by lifting the signal.
Radio frequency signals (for any purpose) can vary throughout a 24 hour period for numerous reasons including atmospheric conditions, this natural variation being the reason why analogue pictures could at times show slightly more speckles on the picture as normal, this purely because of the TV receiving a lower strength signal, however digital TV pictures aren't affected by varying signal levels so long as this level is always above the cut off threshold, as when it drops under, that is when you do witness the difference!
This said based on the Mux 2 picture just dropping out, and not that any signal check has indicated zero signal.

Purchased a freeview box but we dont seem to be able to get any channels on it. I know Little Walsingham, North Norfolk has signal problems but assumed that freeview would sort this out - I dont really understand there seems to be some things saying that freeview wont work until November!?!

Belinda: As you will probably already know you, according to Digital UK's trade predictor, are in a no-go area for Freeview from anywhere, this using "The Pilgrims Rest" in the High street as a marker as you haven't given your exact location.
The reason you will have to wait until the 23rd of November (restricted service starting on 9th) is because the new Freeview service will be using the same frequencies that are presently used by analogue.
By the way, the Freeview starting on the 23rd of November is classed as a "light" service, meaning only three Mux transmitter channels compared to a full services six, the three providing the main BBC & ITV programmes only, that is as well as the HD service.
However there is the possibility that on the 23rd of November that dependant on your particular location, you "might" be able to pick up all six Mux transmitters from Tacolneston, as that would then provide a full Freeview programme service.
Reception predictors, even trade ones, are not by any means 100% accurate in what they show as being possible, and this is why I say "might" when referring to Tacolneston.

8:02 AM
MRB: Reception indications for your location indicate that of being variable on three of the Mux channels but with the other three being reasonably OK, albeit Mux Ch63 (BBC1 etc) being by far the best.
The problem you are experiencing with your new TV could simply possibly be caused by the normal variations in sensitivity between different brands of equipment, however the buzzing noise that has developed during tuning is a bit suspicious of there being a problem within the set itself, especially when looked at along with the other audio peculiarity you mentioned, you should try another tune whilst the aerial is removed to see if it still does it.
Your reception by the way, doesn't really show any signs of improvement until November 23rd, as then good reception of all six Mux transmitters are shown as possible, although Mux1 (BBC1) changes to 8k operation prior to this date on the 9th November at the same time as it moves to Mux Ch55.
link to this comment |
8:09 AM
MRB: A clarification point, when I mentioned "see if it still does it" I am of course referring to the buzzing noise heard whilst tuning, as after you have done that check you will obviously require to carry out another scan once the aerial is re connected, as your test will have blanked the memory.

Muriel Fuller: If you are referring to Mux D (ArqB) you should try carrying out a manual scan on Mux channel 67 and see what comes up as far as signal strength / quality is concerned, storing the results if satisfactory, as although the trade reception predictor gives glowing reports on that channel (as well as the others) I am aware that some people around the Ely area can experience local problems, as these channels are still operating on low power compared to the main BBC / ITV1 Mux transmitters.
Just purely for a test, you could also compare the above with the signal conditions received from Mux C on Ch40, as that transmitter is also operating on the same power as Mux D, this being 20Kw compared to the main transmitters on 180Kw.

I have seen that and also followed the instructions to reset and resacan. Still missing ITV channels. All the channels were back early around 01:00am, and then The signal disappeared for almost all of them around midday today, and now I have the bbc ones back but apart ftom itv3, all itv chaneels plus 5 E4, have either very poor or no signal at all. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to this at all.

Hi
The sound quality on the analogue BBC 1 channel from the Bilsdale transmitter is continually clicking and increasing and decreasing in volume. I understand that engineering work is being carried out this weekend on the transmitter, how long will this fault continue? The fault is affecting several households in my area. Ali: It depends on what station you are receiving from, as Rowridge presently indicates good reception across the board except on Mux B(Ch28) which indicates variable until the 7th of next March.
On the other hand if using Mendip, it likewise shows good reception except for Mux A/SDN (Ch62) this showing as poor, with Mux's C/D joining it on 28th September, and all three showing poor reception until March 28th 2012.

hi ive been having problem with my freeview channels for last few months, both my "multiplexes 1" and "multiplexes A" has been missing while the rest of channels worked fine..most of the time. ive tried retune many times at different occassions, most of the time it came to no avail, on rare occasions i get those channels in extremely blurry reception only to be gone entirely after couple days. any help or advice will be appriciated. ps my aerial is on top of the roof and i never used to have problem receiving those channels when i first brought my freeview inbuilt tv.

Wen from the sound of it you do have a problem with your aerial. Do you have any trees in line with the way your aerial points, if there isn't check your tv aerial plug if it comes straight from your aerial with no plates or box's if it is damp or has rust or a milky white substance call a aerial rigger you do have a problem with your aerial.

If you supply this, preferably in the form of a post code for more accuracy, then further assistance can be given.

Robert - the dissapearance of Mux 2 is due to the fact it operates in 64QAM mode and on channel 68 (at the top end of the spectrum and only transmits at 10KW ERP. After DSO (28th September as no doubt you will be aware) the power increases to 100KW and the problems will dissapear.

I have had freeview working well on all channels but there has been a few new channels added so I did a re-tune to get the other channels. I have now lost BBC 1,2 & 3. I still get BBC News, BBC 4 and CBBC. The signal on BBC News is as good as any other channel. I've tried a manual search on UHF 50 but still not getting 1,2 or 3. The aerial is mounted on the roof. The freeview is built in to the TV. Location is SP105PL Andover. Any suggestions please

I am about to buy a freeview set top box with the approach of the switch off of the analogue signal.
But my TV system at the moment allows me to send both SKY digital and terrestrial signals around the house by way of a loft amplifier.
Will there be any interference or reception issues if I simply put the Freeview output signal into the amplifier to replace the analogue signal?
