To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Hayden: And a final point with regards to your aerial, because Waltham is located at 95 degrees to the left of your aerials present direction of facing Sutton Coldfield that places it just about on one of an aerials two dead spots for reception, i.e: right angles to where it faces, so any signals picked up will be severely reduced unless the aerial is turned around to suit.(100 degrees)

I have a Philips DTR210 Freeview box (connected to a small portable TV in a bedroom), which has run without problems for more than two years. I have occasionally re-tuned it without any difficulty.

I completed the last re-tune when the analogue signal was turned off in my area (Norfolk) last month and all went well. The box immediately picked up all the channels as before. However, after turning the box off, ITV, Ch 4, CH5 and ITV2 vanished. Re-tuning the box brought them back, but once the box was turned off, they disappeared again.

I have followed your suggestions to disconnect the power supply and then re-tune without the aerial connected, but this has made no difference to the problem. I've also checked for a software update, but have the latest version.

In the 11 years since I started watching digital TV, I have bought no less than 14 Freeview boxes and with the exception of an old Sagem unit (and until now the DTR210), they have all failed for a variety of different reasons, in some cases very quickly. I have usually put this down to cheap and cheerful manufacturing, using poor quality components.

I am currently thinking about buying a new HD TV for my living room and perhaps also replacing the portable, but wonder if televisions with digital technology built in are any more reliable than boxes? I cannot remember the last time I had problems with an analogue TV, but really begin to despair about the reliability of digital equipment.

Perhaps digital TV remains in the realm once occupied by products like Windows 95 and will take another decade or so to mature?

Should I just throw away the DTR210? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill: I offer you some thoughts.

I won't give you any definitive answer other than to say that some manufacturers evidently cut corners which is why some devices are now in landfill.

Try Googling "dtr210 loosing channels" (without quotes) and it comes up with quite a few pages.

I don't know what the limit on the number of channels that your device will store, but it could be that that is causing the problem. If I were you, I would check that there aren't any programme channels being stored in the 800s (which are duplicate services from neighbouring transmitter(s)). If there are, then manually tuning might be the answer as you won't end up with the memory being taken up with duplicates.

Bear in mind that you will have to run the scan, switch it off and then on to see what is retained in the memory. That is, does it retain those in the 800s when it is unplugged?

If it turns out that you don't have any in the 800s, then maybe deleting some of the channels you don't watch might help. Some receivers store the scrambled channels even though they don't have method to unscramble them. You might not listen to the radio stations so they might go. Adult and shopping channels might also not be of interest.

I suggest this *if* it is the case that the device's memory is limited, as a workaround.

Bill: Appart from anything Dave Lindsay has mentioned, in general terms boxes that lose channels when switched off usually do this because more channels are being picked up than the devices memory is capable of storing.

You have to start afresh by clearing all settings, this accessed by selecting Menu - Installation - Fist time installation, the box switching off for a few seconds after you have done this, then when the LED on the front panel goes out you can start installation again, as in most cases the problem usually clears after this action has been taken.

Trevor Bailey: As your query concerns reception you will really have to give more information for anyone to be able to assist, like your location (pref: post code) and what make / model of device you are having the problem with.

Have you tried testing the problem TV / box on the aerial connection used by one of the other devices you report is OK?

Mr brown: The most common reason for this problem is due to the box having picked up more programmes than its memory is capable of storing, hence they are lost on switch off.

You will have to carry out a complete "first time scan" or better still a factory reset followed by a re-scan, as either of these procedures usually cures the problem.

I would be grateful of some advice.
My neighbour has a Humax PVR9150T which was tuned to ITV noth east. He said that a few weeks ago he saw a message to update the channels and now his ITV is Calander with North East on channel 900. Some of the EPG listings are blank. I have followed the instructions given on this page but the box is the same. The aeriel is only 2 years old. Thanks.
