From Wikipedia: The channel's annual budget for 2011/12 is 1,166.6 million.3 Along with the BBC's other domestic television stations, and many European broadcasters and some in Asia, it is funded principally by the television licence fee, and therefore shows uninterrupted programming with no commercial advertising at any time. It is currently the most watched television channel in the United Kingdom, ahead of its traditional rival for ratings leadership, ITV1. This system used a vertically-scanned image of 30 lines just enough resolution for a close-up of one person, and with a bandwidth low enough to use existing radio transmitters. - en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia.org link icon read more about BBC One (SD) on wikipedia (summary by Clipped).

How is the free channel paid for?

The £1,402m BBC One budget is funded by the £3,596m Television Licence Fee, and represents 39% of all BBC spending - that's about £1.11 per week per person.

Is the channel live, pre-recorded, new content or repeats?

BBC One has live presentation, and both national and regional are broadcast live. In addition the daily The One Show (7pm) is live, as are sporting events. All other programmes are pre-recorded and are almost always commissioned by the BBC and having their first showing.

What's the channel's unique selling point?

The channel is customized for viewers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as to a lesser extent in the English regions, and has the most extensive television regional news service in the UK.

The programme schedule highlights

Weekdays has national news from 6am-9am, 1pm, 6pm and 10pm and regional news at 1:30pm and 6:30pm. There's a daily soap, Doctors at 1:45pm, and EastEnders (Mon/Fri 8pm, Tue/Thurs 7:30pm) and Holby City (Wed 8pm).

The rest of the schedule is mixed, with factual (Mon 7:30pm, 8:30pm) and entertainment and factual/entertainment mix shows (such as Motorway Cops). Thursday night has politics from 10:35pm onwards, Friday night being entertainment only.

The bits to avoid

The morning schedule of Cash In The Attic, 11:30am and Bargain Hunt, 12:15pm are formalistic.

This channel carries a subtitles service for the deaf, hard of hearing and quiet environments.

andy f: Try doing a manual tune on UHF channel 60.

Beacon Hill's BBC mux is co-channel and as such Slapton's BBC is predicted not as good as D3&4 and BBCB.

I live within scope of both Winter Hill and Bacup sub tramsitters and although I have successfully retuned both my cheap-end of market Freeview digi-boxes, I have also tried retuning my NOVA STICK PC which is USB connected to a PC I have apparently "lost" all BBC channels and some others can anyone suggest whether this is a problem which can be resolved or if I am "stuck with it" as I do not wabnt to retune to the very limited Bacup sub transmitter?

Toni2has:
Looks as if we have a "local" problem with Winter Hill transmissions for mainly BBC and some orher channels, obviously I am not the only one suffering from this situation since the retune on 10th April and yes I have attempted several retunes on the Nova Stick what I cannot understand is that my cheap Freeview recepotors appear to be OK? But what is the solution do we need to complain to BBC after all they are only down the road at MEDIA CITY? (53.2667,-2.5000)

Toni2has: Great logic Tony - your Freeview boxes are perfectly fine but your Nova Stick is not - therefore there must be a problem with the signal from Winter Hill...?

brian: It depends on what's meant by "then they go again", because once a TV or box has been tuned it should never require retuning again unless a notice to this effect has been seen, as any time that selecting a channel results in a blank screen its usually always due the signal received being on the weak side to the extent that its hovering near to the receivers signal level cut off threshold and is jumping in and out of same, and NOT because of the channel having been lost from the tuners memory.

That said, in some older equipment (and not that much so) if more channels are picked up during multiple rescans than the tuners memory capacity can hold then they just drop out again as soon as the TV or box is switched off, this being why that its always advisable to carry out a complete factory reset (default setting or first time installation) before carrying out an auto-tune, this in your particular TV being called "reinstall all services".

Thanks jb38: As far as Michael's comment is concerned I was of course reflecting on others who have commented that they could not appear to retune their equipmemt to Winter Hill's transmissions since 10th April or more to the point the equipment would not retune. After we did not ask for the transmission changes to occur and of course filters may yet be necessary on some equipment! I have in fact just succeeded in receiving all channels on my Nova Stick by entering the Hauppage program on my PC and removing all EPG records and station logs and then rescanning which has worked!
