Freeview reception at S43 1GR

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

vivien dick: As your Freeview reception would appear to be from the Carmel transmitter, then your problem might possibly be down to the level of signal being received during the day time hours dropping off in the evenings due to such as slight changes in atmospheric conditions, something that's not that uncommon in certain areas.

In order to find out if this is the reason (or not!) for the problem, carry out a signal strength / quality test during daytime hours on BBC1 (C60) & ITV1 (C53), making a note of that seen for comparison purposes against that being indicated "after" the signal has apparently failed, because dependant on the levels being indicated (especially quality) it "might" be possible to rectify the problem by the addition of a booster in line with the TV's aerial socket.

By the way, it should be noted that if selecting a programme channel from the EPG / LCN listings results in a blank screen, then its not necessarily always the case that no signal exists, but simply one that is under the threshold level for reception, so carry out the check even although the screen may be blank.

This type of test can also be carried out by going into the tuning menu and selecting "manual" tune, entering the Mux channel number of the transmitter but "not" followed by pressing search or scan, as the level of any signal being received will appear on the indicator bars, Carmels BBC and ITV being C60 & C53 respectively.

vivien dick : Further to that said. Although based on reception predictions I had assumed that your Freeview reception was from the Carmel transmitter, however, viewing a few of the rooftops in your area via Google Earth reveals that the majority of aerials are vertically mounted which matches the polarity of the Kilvey Hill transmitter and "not" Carmel, this latter transmitter radiating in the horizontal plane.

Therefore, although the test procedure remains the same the channel numbers referred to should be changed to the following:

C60 (BBC / Carmel) to C23 (BBC / Kilvey Hill)

C53 (ITV / Carmel) to C26 (ITV / Kilvey Hill)

Although further advice is dependant on the outcome of the test, as a booster is being used its assumed (again!) that the electrical supply to same has not been altered in any way? such as accidentally re-wired via a timer.

My post code is NE66 3FB and your predictive map shows an EE phone mast 1.22Km N of my house. This mast was demolished over 1yr. ago. A former Orange mast it was kindly decommissioned when rationalising the T-Mobile/Orange networks thereby removing my excellent 3G phone signal.

We suddenly lost our signal for all tv programmes at approx. 4.45 p.m. yesterday. We have tried retuning but unsuccessful. We also have BT Vision but we are still unable to get a picture or sound - just a broken mosaic view. Have looked outside & the aerial is still in place & unmoved. What else can we try? Not aware if there are any transmitter problems unless someone can advise differently.

P Stoney: Have to tried checking your aerial lead? It sounds stupid, but a loose or fallen out aerial lead is a favourite problem. If they are fine, then start checking upstream - is probably a broken or loose lead/connection.

For a while now some of our freeview channels have been pixelating, so yesterday we rescanned the TV, which at the moment appears to be much better, however we now seem to have lost channels itv1, itv2, channel 4 & 5. We live in Stourbridge, West Midlands & have a roof ariel fitted.

L Whitehouse: As your Freeview reception would appear to be from Brierley Hill located at approximately two miles away, go into your TV's tuning menu / "manual tune" then enter and scan Mux Ch57, this being Brierley's D3&4 ITV1 etc transmitter.

We did as you suggested but Ch57 doesn't pick up any of those channels, I think our ariel may be pointing to Wrekin.

L Whitehouse: Although a rooftop check of the aerials in your area reveals 99% of them to be vertically mounted (elements facing up and down) and pointing towards Brierley Hill, one exception exists by it being horizontally mounted and facing towards The Wrekin transmitter @ 22 miles away.

If by any chance this happens to be yours? then carry out a manual scan on Mux Ch23 which is The Wrekins ITV transmitter.
