Freeview reception at OX14 1UQ

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

Harry Gorman: The short answer is Freesat (if you want them on a free-to-air platform). To get them on terrestrial (Freeview) you will need to receive from Caradon Hill, and judging by the terrain in the way I'm not sure that will provide stable reception:
Terrain between ( m a.g.l.) and (antenna m a.g.l.) - Optimising UK DTT Freeview and Radio aerial location
See if any of your neighbours have aerials pointing to Caradon Hill, as they will probably have them in order to get all the Freeview channels. Maybe ask if they have reliable reception or whether it changes depending on the weather and time of year.

andrew king: The short and likely answer is "yes", but you "might" need a replacement aerial to receive COM7 (and COM8 when it comes on air). All transmitters broadcast the HD multiplex PSB3 which carries HD variants of BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, CBBC, ITV and Channel 4. HD variants of BBC Four, BBC News, Channel 4+1, 4seven, Al Jazeera and others are carried on COM7 which is a quasi-national multiplex. To receive COM7 from Mendip you "might" require a wideband aerial because the frequency used is outside that which an aerial fitted in the days of analogue works best at (what's known as "out of group" - if it's a Group C/D aerial). I emphasise "might" - cross that bridge when you get to it. At 18 miles from the transmitter you appear to have clear line-of-sight, assuming no obstructions on the ground. Without question, if you do replace your aerial I would go with a log periodic: Aerials, TV Aerial and Digital Aerial

steve tames: Which channels are affected? What's the make and model of the box?

If you are using Crystal Palace or Hannington then there haven't been any retunes to make way for 4G.

steve tames: Any box that loses channels when the mains power supply is switched of is usually caused by the number of channels picked up exceeding the capacity of the tuners memory.

Carry out a "reset" or "default setting" on the box to delete everything stored in the memory system prior to carrying out another retune, "first time installation" (should your box have it) being a more straightforward method.

Having issues with the reception for various channels for the last few weeks. The issue only with about half the channels. Have tried rescanning and also realigning the aerial, to no avail. EX 14 3HT.
What else can I try?

Harry Gorman - I presume you are on the local Kingsbridge transmitter, this transmitter only carries the public service multiplexes and therefore you will not receive ITV 3&4 which are carried on one of the commercial multiplexes. I would doubt you would be able to get a decent signal fron one of the main transmitters (Caradon Hill or Beacon Hill) in your location which leaves the only possibility being satellite (Freesat, Sky or Freesat from Sky)

Fred : Stockland Hill at just over 8 miles / 90 degrees is indicated as being the transmitter that covers your area, albeit with a line-of-sight obstruction to the signal path being seen at just over 1 mile prior to your location.

Although DUK's reception predictor does suggest that good reception is possible, L.O.S obstructions to a signal path can cause variations in the level of the signal being received, and its possible that your problem "might" just be down to the signal level hovering at just above the threshold for reception.

Therefore, you should carry out a signal check on the channels in question, monitoring the strength, but particularly the quality of over a few minutes or so, if both levels are seen to dip slightly now and again then a variable booster is liable to improve the situation, however if the quality is seen to drop to almost zero (if not vanish completely) then the problem is likely to be out with your control, and of course boosters would not be of any assistance as they cannot compensate for loss of quality.

Further advice dependant on feedback.
