Freeview reception at W1S 2JT

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

I live in Brighton and retuned as advised on 16 October. Initially OK but the HD channels keeping dropping out with fluctuating signal strength and quality. This was through a Youview box so I tried retuning directly through the TV but the same result. I have retuned without the aerial and then with the aerial. I have unplugged and gone through the procedure again. On occasions all the HD channels are missing, on others they are there but the signal fluctuates.
Youview box does not have the option to manually retune. I tried manually retuning on the TV to 36 but nothing was saved to memory. The list no longer has 36.
I am in a block of apartments with a communal aerial but other residents don't seem to have a problem.
Everything was fine before the retune... HELP!

Brian Stewart:

If your neighbours are receiving the HD channels on UHF36 ok then I suggest you check your internal coax plugs and connections, flyleads etc., by unplugging them checking for corrosion, poor connections etc, and plugging them in again. If there've been any poor connections simply unplugging and plugging in again helps clean the contacts.
Try a different flylead from the aerial socket direct to the TV, also check you don't have any boxes that have an RF output that is tuned to UHF36 or any of those lower channels. If so, I'd retune them to above UHF56.

I live at PO38 3QA and for the last few days have had problems with reception. I have tried every retune procedure, wiping stored channels etc. I get varying freeview signal strength and quality figures ranging from both100% to virtually both zero. For example, last night we had flawless viewing on all HD channels, this morning got the message 'no or weak signal'. This is driving me nuts, how can signal strength keep altering?
Will be very grateful for any suggestions. The aerial is located outside and I can actually see the transmitter from its location.

your location is noted as 50.61877450000001,-1.2217191000000002

Hmm. No source I've check has reported any faults and there's not supposed to be any planned engineering affecting your transmitters. Perhaps first, see the post just before yours about checking coax plugs, connections and flyleads.

Can we confirm which transmitter your aerial is pointing at as you probably ought to be able to see both?
Has the aerial got the rods vertical or horizontal?
Is it pointing about 5deg. S of SE at Ventnor, or about 4deg. S of NE at Rowridge?

Have you bought any new technology items recently? Have you changed anything electronic/electrical?
There've been no changes at the transmitters lately, so unless you may have changed something I'd find it rather strange that you'd suddenly have too much signal.

Andrew Spanner:

Ooops, my apologies, I didn't check carefully enough just now. If you are pointing at Ventnor, there was a retune event on the 16th, but also the power of all 3 multiplexes increased.
Have you had an aerial change in recent years? The the channels have moved from Group C/D to Group A. If you have a wideband aerial then you don't need an aerial change and there's a possibility you have too much signal. The chances are that because you are so close to Ventnor, a C/D group aerial might be ok but you may still have too much signal.

Tell us about your aerial and which transmitter you are actually using.

Your winter hill freeview transmitter frequencies are showing to be moved from what they were two weeks ago. I am still receiving my freeview programs on channels 31,37,49,50,54,55.58 & 59. I no longer receive the programs that were on RF channels 56 & 57 possibly due to reduced signal level.
These RF channels are not as shown on your web site for the winter hill transmitter (https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Winter_Hill). They are shown as RF channels 29, 31, 32, 34, 35, 37, 56, & 57. I do not get any signal on these channels except 31 & 37, which have been the usual winter hill frequencies for some time now. Is the web site wrong with regard to my indicated program frequencies or are they the intended ones after the next transmitter's retune.
Kind regards from Roger Livesey.

Roger Livesey.:

It has been stated many, many times on this website that the channels indicated has not been updated due to the pressure of work on the site owner, Briantist. Again, we contributors always suggest you look at the channel allocations given by the Digital UK Coverage Checker that is run on behalf of the transmitter operators and is the most accurate source for such information.

Canterbury

I live in Canterbury and have an indoor aerial in the loft and our current reception is from Dover.
Dover doesn't transmit COM8 programmes and my questions are:
Will Dover be upgraded to provide COM8 programmes? If so when?
Is there an alternative transmitter that covers Canterbury that provides COM8 programmes?
If there are no terrestrial options what is the simplest and cheapest alternative?

Many thanks

Bert Leslie:

The Dover transmitter (nor any other not transmitting COMs 7&8) will never be upgraded to transmit them. They are temporary multiplexes currently scheduled to be closed by 2022 but that will depend on the auctioning of the small frequency band in which they sit for 5G SDL services. The frequencies immediately above and below are already allocated to 5G (hence the current 700MHz clearance program).

Whilst Dover doesn't serve all parts of the Canterbury area, eg. towards Chartham which has a Relay transmitting only the PSB muxes, there's no other major transmitter officially covering Canterbury.
The only (Meridian) transmitter in the region that I can think of that carries COMs 7&8 is Bluebell Hill. There is also Crystal Palace (London region) but you are going to need to be quite high up (and most likely N of locations like Tyler Hill, Blean, Rough Common etc) to even stand a chance of getting them. In essence it depends on location and a full postcode would be needed to look at the predicted reception. Even them you will need a really clued up aerial installer to provide you with an installation that'll give reliable reception.

The best alternative would be Freesat. If you have a very modern HD (UHD even) TV, it may already have in in-built satellite tuner so you would only need a dish and LNB. But watch any planning conditions, parts of the area will be "Conservation" areas and there can be restrictions.
