Mendip, Bristol and relay transmitters - retune require on 27th March 2013

To allow for the launch later this year of 4G mobile broadband, changes are being made to some digital TV transmitters. Many viewers in the South West of England will have to retune after 6am on on 27th March 2013 to continue to receive certain Freeview TV and radio channels.

published on UK Free TV

At 6am on 27th March 2013, several multiplexes will change their transmission frequencies.

Notably the main transmitters will make changes. This includes the Mendip transmitter, where the BBCA multiplex (including 1 BBC One West, 2 BBC Two England, 7 BBC Three, 9 BBC Four, 70 CBBC Channel, 71 CBeebies, 80 BBC News, 81 BBC Parliament) will move from C61 to C49.

Also changing is Bristol Kings Weston where the D3+4 multiplex (3 ITV (West), 4 Channel 4 South ads, 5 Channel 5 Part Network ads, 6 ITV 2, 13 Channel 4+1 South ads, 14 More 4, 28 E4, 33 ITV +1 (West)) will move from C50 to C40, and Bristol Ilchester Crescent where ArqivaB (15 Film 4, 18 4Music, 19 Yesterday, 21 VIVA, 24 ITV 4, 41 Sky Sports 1 (not free), 42 Sky Sports 2 (not free), 47 4seven, 83 Al Jazeera English, 85 Russia Today English,) moves from C49 to C39+.

See below for a full list of transmission masts that will make changes.

When you now rescan, you MUST do a "first time installation" or "factory reset" scan, not an "add channels". Do the procedure you did on September 30th 2009. If you can't recall what this was, please see List of manuals for Freeview retune, or try the generic clear and rescan procedure.

Dave yes all COM muxes received with signal strength 9 or 10 and quality 10 out of 10 from Mendip channels 48,52,54 and 56 but not 49 (only strength 10 and 0 signal quality).

Bryn Stephens: As I say, I think you will have to wait until 22 May when PSB1 from Penderyn moves from C49 to C39.

Until then, if you want to watch the BBC you may have to either adjust your rooftop aerial to face Penderyn or else use a set-top aerial on Penderyn.

Dave,

I am not using a communal aerial. Oddly, when I try to retune I see the "signal strength" bar on C49 is about 80%, but the "quality" bar never illuminates and no channels are added. I successfully retuned my neighbour's receiver. The only differnce between us is that my old Yagi aerial is in the loft and hers is outside.

John Crabb: What about the strengths on the other multiplexes?

PSB2 - ITV
COM4 - ITV3
COM5 - Pick TV
COM6 - Film4

Dave,

Strengths are about the same on the other channels indicated for Mendip, but quality 10. This applies to the HD channels and ITV SD. From memory, for Mendip, HD is on C58. It is really only C49 that is no good and possibly C48 too, I also see during retune that some channels in the low 20s are also poor. Could bandwidth limitations on either my aerial or amplifier be prejudicing the lower frequency channels? Thsanks for your help by the way!

John Crabb: I write on here as a technical bod and not an aerial professional.

You could always try removing the amplifier. If it was installed to pick up the lower-powered pre-switchover channels, then it may be surplus to requirements owing to the boost in digital signal strengths.

The 20s aren't used by Mendip, so whatever you're picking up is coming from elsewhere and may therefore be poorer.

With lofts there are spots where the signal isn't as good and all channels often aren't the same.

At Westbury Railway Station (road level) had always previously received all BBC stations, for a short period on Wed 27th had weak reception but today Thu 28th even after yet another rescan no BBC whatsoever.
How about an update as to what is going on?

After retuning my TV yesterday twice in the morning and again in the evening my pictures for ONLY BBC 1 and 2 continully break up, no other channels are involved. Again this morning the same thing happened, I retuned twice and this does make any difference to the picture. This has never happened before only since the update on the 27-3-13.What can I do to remedy this problem. The signal strength now says poor, before it said good.I receive my signal from wenvoe transmitter.

Mike Orchard.: I am surprised that you are able to receive from Wenvoe at your location. Perhaps your receiver has tuned to Mendip instead.

All aerials that I can see are pointing southwards to Mendip. Wenvoe is near Cardiff (which is westwards) and as such, broadcasts BBC Wales and ITV Wales regions; Mendip broadcasts BBC West and ITV West.

If you are in fact supposed to be using Mendip then perhaps your tuner is defaulting to Bristol King's Western for BBC services. The signal strength screen (on BBC standard definition services) should say that you are tuned to C49 for Mendip and C43 for King's Western. If you're tuned to the latter when it should be the former then you may be able to enact a workaround by having the aerial unplugged for the first 55% of the scan. Having done this, should you be missing ITV3, do a manual scan of UHF channel 48. If you are missing BBC standard definition services, do a manual scan of UHF channel 49.

Mendip channel retune, location Nailsea. Why do I get S4C - the Welsh Channel 4 on station number 4 instead of the English one. Am I picking up Wenvoe instead of Mendip?
