To deal with the problem you must clear the channel list completely and then rescan - if your box has it in the menus, please the 'installation menu' to do an initial scan or a reset to factory settings or First Time Installation. You MUST delete the entire existing list of channels. On most boxes this technique can be also be used:

Try this:

1) unplug your Freeview box (or idTV) from the mains;

2) unplug the aerial from the Freeview box by disconnecting the cable from the 'RF in' socket;

3) wait 30 seconds;

4) plug Freeview box (or idTV) mains back in;

5) do a complete scan for channels - it will fail without the aerial. (This may be in the installation or initialization menu, and is distinct from any 'add channels option'). Once this is done your channel line up should be empty;

6) reinsert aerial by reconnecting to the 'RF in' connection;

7) do a complete scan for channels again.

The Freeview channel line-up provided by six "multiplexes" - each of which carry five or more TV channels, radio channels, text services and EPG data. In this diagram each ROW represents a multiplex. If you are still missing a whole multiplex (ie everything on the row) you may need to replace your aerial with a wideband type, purchase a larger aerial or you may have interference from a VCR, games console, Sky Digibox or similar.

Mike:

To be able to offer any advice we need you to provide a full piost code. That will trigger the display of a row of small boxes below your posting which we contributors can use to examine the signal reception conditions at your location.

Note that not all transmitters carry all the services, but all the main transmitter carry most (all the PSB and commercial channels but some may not carry COM7 and COM8).

I have happily received terrestrial HD TV on a Samsung LED TV since 2012. Last month the HD TV channels went down suddenly. I tried autotune - SD channels found but no HD channels. Connected to Samsung on live chat - terrestrial SD TV channels had a signal strength of 100% with no errors. Samsung technician concluded HD tuner on TV had gone. Took the opportunity to upgrade to a QLED TV but have the same problem - it won't tune to HD TV channels. HD across net and DVD all work fine. My post code is AL6 9RG and I have checked the alignment of the ariel to the local transmitter (229 deg). The QLED will autotune to channel 43. I have done numerous factory resets and retunes with no connections to remove channel history but still won't find HD TV. I have tried a manual tune to channel 46 but get a 0% signal. Not quite sure what to try next to work out what's not working. Anyone get any suggestions ?

RayB: If you've changed the TV, and your still not getting HD channels, then logically its:

a) The problem lies with your system

b) Your not tuned to a transmitter that carries HD channels (which is impossible)

c) The HD channels are being lost, perhaps because of signal strength, or the mux is being blocked in some way, or the aerial itself.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but there are some clues. The 100% signal strength makes sense if your tuned into Welwyn (and excludes a loose connection, etc), but obviously thats a very limited service.

I'd ask your neighbours what services they get - the plot seems to think that Hemel Hempstead has a big problem with signal path, but Digital UK reckon that Crystal Palace/Sandy Heath are doable. You might need to move the aerial, but if yours is pointing a different way, and they get a full service, then it might be worth a try.

HD channels can blank out if there is too high a signal, but whats strange is that you dont even seem to be picking any up.

I'd start with looking at the the aerials in the area. I just looked on Google maps, and most of the aerials seem to be pointing vaguely east - which would mean Chrystal Palace. Try a manual tune and see if you can pick it up, although why the TV isn't picking it up first anyway is a mystery. It might even be worth tuning it via someone elses aerial, and then see if that works with your own system!

Thats the best I can suggest, but I'm sure people more expert than me can advise better.

RayB: If you are seeing a signal strength of 100% then you are likely suffering with signal overload (the tuner is being deafened due to being shouted at). Search for the article "Too much of a good thing" on this website.

BBC channels often break up (pixels disintegrate), plus sound goes at one side of house, yet work well on the other. We are near to local transmitter at Kings Weston, with Mendip and Wenlove fairly near too. Can anyone explain? Our aerial on faulty side is relatively new. BBC Bristol say no reported transmitter problems currently.

J Morris: Check the signal strength of the TV with the problem. Signal strength could be too high or low - TV tuners can have different sensitivity, and of course the wiring to a particular TV ight be at fault.

J Morris:

Depending on your exact location in relation to the local transmitters you should get a good signal reception. But the only way to tell is to put your full post code into this website to bring up the series of blue boxes below your posting. Then you, and we, can see where you are and whether there are obstructions between you and the Kings Weston Hill or Mendip transmitters. Wenvoe is just the other side of Cardiff and carries BBC Wales, S4C, etc rather than the local regional services for Bristol, etc so would probably not be ideal unless you speak Welsh.

You should also carry out a signal strength check, as MikeB suggests. You need between 60% and 85% - not more and not less. If you have more then search for 'Too much of a good thing ...' on this website. It is also worth checking all your aerial leads and connections as a little corrosion on the contacts can play havoc with the signals.

Tony Royston:

Please give a full post code so that we contributors cvan see what the signal reception is likely to be where you are located. You could be using one of more than 1000 transmitters and we can't tell which without the full post code.
