Peter Henderson: Londonderry must be one of the few transmitters that carried Channel 5 analogue, but which aren't full-Freeview.

Larne (Northern Ireland) DAB transmitter
Wednesday 6 February 2013 3:51PM

John Houston: Very very doubful. Inver is Gaelic for 'the land around the mouth of the river', so I guess that you're very low lying.

Digital UK predictor suggests only the Larne relay when a postcode on Inver Road is inputted.

There would appear not to be another trick that you may pull to get the full service which is reception from the UK mainland or Isle of Man.

All transmitters on IoM are Freeview Lite. Darvel's COM channels (those that you're trying to get) are co-channel (same frequencies) as Divis' COMs. Still, if you can pick up Darvel's COMs you might be in an area where you are sufficiently screened from Divis that it doesn't interfere. But...I really wouldn't like to be drawn on how likely this might be to work.

If it does, you could obviously combine the feeds from the aerials so you could watch NI regional TV plus the COMs from elsewhere.

If you do have a stab at Darvel, then it uses all Group A channels, so use only a Group A aerial as widebands are inferior for Group A channels.

ATV also sells stuff; other retailers are available.

Peter Henderson: Of course, whilst Londonderry did carry Channel 5, its parent didn't. And the power of C5 analogue was three times that of the other four channels. So I guess that it was intended to spill over into what was a Limavady area.

I wonder how many Limavady viewers had a second aerial put up for Channel 5. And for those who could receive good signals from either, how many switched from using Limavady to using Sheriff Mountain. These people will now have it all to do again to get full Freeview, particularly if they disposed of their Limavady aerial.

Peter Henderson: Mind you, that said, prior to switchover, people may have been switching back to (or to) Limavady in order to receive Freeview then.

Steve James: First off, I would check that it is tuned to the transmitter to which your aerial faces.

At your location their would appear to be two main contenders which are only 25 degrees apart and probably quite strong.

Reigate transmitter broadcasts on channels above those of Crystal Palace for PSB channels (BBC, ITV, C4 etc), so maybe your aerial faces Reigate and your TV has tuned to Crystal Palace.

You need to view the signal strength screen whilst on the following and cross-reference to see if it is the correct transmitter or not:

BBC One, ITV1, BBC One HD (if applicable), ITV3, Pick TV, Film4

For Crystal Palace, the six channel numbers are 23, 26, 30(HD), 25, 22, 28

For Reigate the six channel numbers are 60, 57, 53(HD), 21, 24, 27

Crystal Palace is on a bearing of 346 degrees with aerial horizontal.

Reigate is on a bearing of 11 degrees with aerial vertical.

Divis (Northern Ireland) transmitter

Lynn Steenson: If it is the case that your aerial is directed to Brougher Mountain, then you will need to investigate the possibility of using Divis instead.

Brougher's COMs are 2kW whereas its PSBs are 20kW. The reason being that its COMs are co-channel with Divis' PSBs and therefore it's done to protect against interference to Divis PSB viewers.

Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) transmitter
Friday 8 February 2013 10:50AM

Marie: Confirm that it is tuned to the 'right' transmitter for ITV/C4/C5 etc (i.e. that to which your aerial faces) and not another one.

Bring up the signal strength screen on ITV and see which UHF/RF channel (frequency) it is tuned to. For Emley Moor it is 44.

However, you may find that it is tuned to Bilsdale on 29 (which carries Tyne Tees rather than Yorkshire) or Belmont on 25 which carries the East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire variant of Yorkshire.

If you find that the issue is that your TV is tuned to one of these two, then you should be able to prevent it from defaulting to it by having the aerial lead unplugged for the first 30% of the scan (or until it gets past scanning UHF channel 30).

Emley Moor (Kirklees, England) transmitter
Friday 8 February 2013 11:04AM

Marie: If you set is tuned to Emley Moor transmitter, then are you using an amplifier and if so, try removing it or reducing its level.

Your area would appear to have clear line-of-sight at 23 miles, so the signal would be expected to be strong.

Dr B J Goldsmith: In your general area Crystal Palace and Reigate would appear as if they might be strong and roughly in the same direction. Check to see that your receivers are tuned (for BBC standard definition services) to Reigate on UHF channel 60 rather than Crystal Palace on 23. This information is usually given on the signal strength screen.

It's easy to install

angela otoole: You can only use a satellite dish that is set-up to receive Saorsat, with an appropriate receiver.

Knowledge of your location may allow assessment of your options with regards reception of RT via a terrestrial transmitter. In some areas a separate aerial will be required.
