Hi, I've been trying for many years to get decent viewing at my home. CH3 8BA, every checker I look at tells me Moel-y-parc is the transmitter to aim for. The problem is I live in a dip and and surrounded by hills close to my home. I have no line of sight. I've tried a number of aerials but nothing is offering a consistent picture.
To stand any chance I think I'd need a pole on the chimney at least 18ft to ensure I clear the hills.
Any thoughts that could help me?

David: Do you have a clear view of the sky to the south/south east? If so, consider getting Freesat, which will give most of the channels available on Freeview as well as various others via free to air satellite (i.e. a one-off cost for the dish, cabling and receiver, with no ongoing subscription cost).

How odd. The Freeview Detailed Coverage checker for your postcode say your "most likely" transmitter is Winter Hill yet it's only predicting good coverage from COM7, poor for COM8 and nothing for the other multiplexes!!
Yet is shows Good coverage from the "alternative transmitter" at Moel y Parc. Well we have come across stupid anomalies like this in the coverage checker before.
Looking at the actual terrain, there seems to be a clear line of sight due W to Moel Y Parc but towards the N end of your postcode, Winter Hill (to the NNE) is obscured somewhat by the terrain, also trees may be an issue.
As StevensOnln1 has suggested, going for Freesat may well be the solution if you really can't get a reliable signal from Moel Y Parc. Indeed your TV may already have a built in satellite tuner, many modern sets do.

StevensOnln1: I do have a clear view of the sky in that direct, I was hoping that Freeview via the aerial was going to win out but this is just not going to happen.
Thank you for you're quick response.

Are you saying that there's no clear line of sight due W?

Aerial is on flat roof area at top of 3 storey building comprising 3 flats (one each storey) in Brodstairs CT10 1DP. Aerial is next to a Sky dish serving middle flat. Cannot retune smart TVs to find/pick up any signal for ITV, Channel 4 but can find BBC channels though these break up due to weak signals as well especially in afternoon. Freeview experience therefore has been almost non-existent for many weeks.

Hmm, you are not in a good spot there having very limited choice. Do you know which way your aerial is pointing and whether the rods are vertical or horizontal, there's a choice of which transmitters you MIGHT try and get, none with good reception!
To add to things, there has been recent Planned Engineering on some transmitters that you might possibly get but that is supposedly completed. However, to mess things up there has also been some Tropospheric Ducting recently (see https://www.bbc.co.uk/rec…iew) causing interference from other transmitters (UK or Europe).

When I say which way your aerial is pointing, I mean rough compass bearing, not which transmitter, but if you know that, it could help.

The postcode database is either screwed up or is an antique.
Bizarre results imply I need to swing my areial around between Crystal Palace and Hannington depending on which channel I want to watch. This is nonsense. All channels except the two different local TV channels are transmitted from both.
What happened to the excellent predictor that used to be, I think, accessible from both the ofcom and freeview websites that gave results for many transmitters?? I can't find it now.

It may seem bizarre, but it's not, it's telling you which transmitter gives you the most reliable signal for each multiplex, if you'd clicked on the Frequency Data link it would show you the predicted signal levels. (There is an error on this site for Crystal Palace as it lists C48 for PSB3 instead of C30, but many lists on this site haven't been correctly updated with all the 700MHz Clearance changes as the site owner hasn't had time.)
You'd get good reception from Hannington for all multiplexes, fractionally better for the PSBs from Crystal Palace, but poorer for the COMs except 7&8 which are marginally better from Crystal Palace.
The Digital UK Detailed Coverage Checker to which you refer was moved by Freeview/DUK from DUK's own website and amalgamated into the Freeview one (badly). There are boxes on the Freeview Homepage Freeview | All your favourite TV shows, all in one place and all for free & having entered your details, you then had to scroll down on the new page past all the Channels Icons to click Detailed view. After a lot of criticism they've since added boxes on the Corporate "Platform Management" page that take you straight to the Detailed view.
As you may recall the Detailed Coverage Checker gave a list of predicted transmitters and their multiplexes that may be receivable at the specified location, that's still the case. If you put your details in the boxes and check, you'll see that it's giving much the same results as you see from this site.
But bizarrely The Freeview/DUK checker suggests the most likely transmitter is Crystal Palace despite overall reception being somewhat better from Hannington! However this sort of oddity is also the case for a number of other locations and other transmitters.
HTH & explains what you're seeing.
