Freeview reception at SP6 1AN

For reliable and stable Freeview reception, you need an unobstructed path between the TV aerial on your roof and the digital TV transmitter. The map below shows the transmitters predicted to provide a signal at this location.

You can click on any transmitter symbol to show the coverage area as a green overlay on the map. Double click on a transmitter symbol to go to the transmitter information page.

You can also view the ten closest potential '4G-at-800' mobile phone masts within 1.5km of the selected location - these masts may be used for 4G-at-800 mobile broadband services from 2013-2015.

Richard Mudge:

Hi Richard. The aerial should be pointing at compass bearing 111 degrees - that's 21 degrees S of due E, almost ESE.
The Freeview predictor shows you should get good signals from Mendip for the 6 main multiplexes (not the Local one as you are off-beam for that, it's beamed towards Bristol - you can always try a manual tune on UHF C30 as it may be weak and an autotune may miss it).

However, the predictor says you can also get good signals from Wenvoe and Stockland Hill which you may get from sidelobes (even rear ones) of the aerial's reception, so you may have to manual tune Mendip's UHF channels to make sure you get them correctly.
Mendip's correct UHF channels are C32, C34, C35, C48, C33, C36, C30. That's is the order BBCA/PSB1, D3&4/PSB2, BBCB HD/PSB3, SDN/COM4, ArqA/COM5, ArqB/COM6; Local mux.

If you can't get the Mendip (Bristol) Local multiplex, you could try a Manual tune on UHF C37 which is the Local mux from Wenvoe, which you might get off the back of the aerial albeit possibly weak.
Whilst you may not especially want Cardiff local news on LCN7, you may like to get the other channels carried on the mux.
See Channel listings for Industry Professionals | Freeview for which channels are carried on which multiplex.

Bear in mind that standard Tri-boom's are a wideband aerial unless this is one of the newer K Group tuned versions, so you might need a (free) filter from restoretv.uk if any 4/5G mobile masts using 700MHz set up near you - but you should get a postcard from restoretv.uk if so, but it doesn't always happen.
I'm glad your tri-boom is being loft mounted, they have a high wind loading and would need sturdy mounting if external!

Hi,
I believe my Arial is directed towards Sandy Heath. I've had no freeview channels for 6 weeks or so, postcode PE8 6PZ. The map on this site suggests I should align the arial to the Waltham transmitter.
Can anyone offer advice?
Regards
Helen

Helen: Sandy Heath is predicted to provide a good signal for all multiplexes at your postcode, whereas Waltham is predicted to provide a good signal for PSB1/2/3 with a weaker signal for COM4/5/6 which may result in reception of many commercial channels being unreliable.

Have you carried out any investigation into the loss of signal? Start by checking for any loose or damaged cables or connections behind your TV, then work your way back towards the aerial as far as you can safely access. Is your aerial still pointing in the correct direction (164 degrees compass bearing)? Are any neighbours suffering similar reception problems? Don't retune your TV as this will just delete all of your channels and search for them again, making it more difficult to know when the fault has been found.

Helen:

Which map are you referring to? If it's the one you get from "Get to see your Freeview Prediction" by entering your postcode above, then I don't know why Sandy Heath is not showing on that map, it should be there. Nor why it indeed suggests Belmont for COM5 but not COMs 4&6 when reception of the COMs would be the same, I'm afraid that's ridiculous and it's an error.
And further to that even Waltham is predicted by Freeview to give better reception of the COMs than Belmont!!.
As StevensOnln1 has said Freeview's own predictor shows Sandy Heath with the best predicted reception, and also as your most likely transmitter.

Viewers on the North Somerset coast near Mindhead will only receive transmissions from Wales including Welsh Channel 4 if their antennas are misaligned as the signal from South Wales is very strong across the Bristol Channel.

Nicholas Anderson: All the Welsh transmitters broadcast the same version of Channel 4 as those in England. You are probably thinking of S4C which is a completely separate Welsh language channel, which did show programmes from Channel 4 in the past up until digital switchover completed due to Channel 4 analogue not being broadcast in Wales. There has been no link or sharing of programmes between Channel 4 and S4C since then, with both channels being available from every transmitter in Wales.
