Ted Slater:

No problem Ted. What a shame that Humax haven't got a solution, or even know what the cause is!

Is it capable of transferring recordings to a USB stick?
If so, you could contemplate that and then try a full reset!
BUT if it is, check the USB recordings first. I've heard of some issues on some devices where HD recordings suffer judder on playback, no idea what the cause may be except maybe the USB stick can't cope with higher bit rates!

If I come across anything else I'll post it.
You could try an email to help@freeview.co.uk and ask them "What are the technical differences between transmission of Quest LCN12 on COM6/ArqB and Quest+1 LCN70 on COM5/ArqA and then explain that LCN12 is missing from your EPG despite retunes. Also ask "And/or are their technical errors in the EPG?" (I know there are some but don't know if they'd be the cause).

Getting intermittent no signal for BBCA channels and occasionally SDN channels, other multiplexes are fine. This has been happening for a few months. It doesn't sound like induction interference as it isn't momentary - once the channels disappear they're gone for the evening, reappearing the next day. Problem happens when using our Humax Aura box and when bypassing the box and plugging the aerial directly into the TV (Panasonic 2013) so I don't think it's our equipment.

Signal strength for other multiplexes around 80% with 100% signal quality, but when we have apparently 'good' reception the signal strength on BBCA and SDN is only just over 50%. Aerial is on the roof and was replaced 2020, aerial guy tested and couldn't find a problem with the aerial or connections, except for some 5G interference, for which we now have the gadget from Restore TV, but this hasn't made any difference. Any suggestions for what we should try next?

In fact, from the Guildford transmitter, the Smithsonian channel is not received. I seem to remember that this channel is no longer broadcast on Freeview.

Elaine Graham-Leigh:

Apologies, we seem to have missed your post for some reason!
This is odd that you are only getting 50% strength on BBCA and SDN when the others are 80%, especially if you've had it checked and the aerial and connections are ok. At least the quality is 100% which is important.

Make sure you haven't got any HDMI leads running close to your aerial leads or flyleads.
Are there any nearby trees on the aerial line-of-sight to the transmitter? I have come across some funny signal behaviour with trees before now!

I assume you are familiar with Crystal Palace's UHF channels. Just to check
In the multiplex order BBCA/PSB1, D3&4/PSB2, BBCB HD/PSB3, SDN/COM4, ArqA/COM5, ArqB/COM6, Local multiplex, the UHF channels for Crystal Palace are as follows
C23, C26, C30, C25, C22, C28, C35 (London Local mux).
Just in case you retuned at a time when weather or other interference or engineering affected the signal and you're inadvertently tuned to another transmitter (possibly Alexandra Palace or Bluebell Hill).

Whatever is causing that signal to be down near 50% may make you more vulnerable to interference due to weather related tropospheric ducting causing signals from distant transmitters to be received affecting your wanted signal. There was some quite strong "tropo" last Wednesday, but it'd be surprising if the effect lasted all evening.

When you say the problem happens occasionally, can you give some idea of how occasional? When it happens is it always at a similar or exact time?

Check you don't have any old analogue devices like games consoles, VCRs etc. even an old satellite box with an RF output tuned to a lower channel.

Good evening,
I've recently moved house. The aerial in the loft wasn't working put at different angles.
All houses on this development have loft aerials or some have dishes.
At first I couldn't get anything, then I plugged in an old aerial the kind for mini tvs and I managed to get 7 channels. Then 20, last night I got 160, however, only about a dozen work. Most of the time it says no service.
I have to twiddle the aerial until I get a picture and hope for the best.
My transmitter is Bluebell Hill 5 miles away, I live in close proximity to the River.
Are you able to help/guide me?
How do I subscribe, I found this site by accident.
Many thanks for your time.
Jeni

Jeni Spyby: Some of the houses, notably 91 to 97 Waterside may find it difficult to impossible because to point to Bluebell Hill may necessitate pointing the aerial through the loftspace of the other adjoining properties. That said, the new Gillingham Test Centre transmitter may be available, although it transmits only the PSB multiplexes. To explain this requires going into more detail.

Bluebell Hill is 8km out on a bearing of 201 degrees. The Gillingham Test Centre is 4km out on a bearing of 168 degrees, and it went into service on 11th July 2019.

The first thing to do is to tune the channels in. Once you have the channels tuned to the transmitters, then don't retune because it won't improve reception for the transmitter(s) the TV is tuned to.

Gillingham Test Centre is a new transmitter which broadcasts the three PSB multiplexes on the same channels as Bluebell Hill. The two transmitters work together and are in time with one another, meaning you may be receiving some signal from both. However, the Test Centre doesn't carry the COM multiplexes, meaning if you get them they may not be as good, as you can only be getting them from Bluebell Hill.

The channel allocations for Bluebell Hill are:

PSB1 - BBC One, BBC Two, etc. - C32
PSB2 - ITV, Channel 4, etc. - C34
PSB3 - BBC One HD and other HD channels - C45
COM4 - QVC, Drama, etc. - C40
COM5 - Sky Arts, Really, etc. - C43
COM6 - Quest, W, etc. - C46

Check that the channels are tuned correctly. For example, the signal strength screen may should "C32" when on BBC One (as above). Use manual tuning to try and add any missing ones.

The Gillingham Test Centre broadcasts the three PSB multiplexes but not the COMs. The channels it transmits on are as per those I've listed. Thus, try to work out whether you are getting good reception on the PSBs but not the COMs. Is it the COMs that are not good? If so then this is probably explained by the fact that they are only coming from Bluebell Hill, and that with the PSBs you have the Gillingham Test Centre as well.

Horror+ gone without warning replaced by another pointless 'reality' channel. Blaenplwyf gives the best coverage here - which then only means a 'limited' service. It also seems Freeview is going to be switched off in a few years anyway. More info. please.

Philip Davies:

Blaenplwyf transmits all the 6 main multiplexes as every other main transmitter in the UK, so there is no "limited" service.
A small number of main transmitters have a Local multiplex which is beamed towards the larger urban centres of population that they are intended to serve. This is a commercial decision by the broadcasters. This Local multiplex currently carries 5 TV channels, 3 of which are children's channels.

HorrorXtra & RealityXtra channels are part of the CBS group and its was they that decided to swap the multiplexes that they were on - unfortunately they didn't widely publicise this, so HorrorXtrta is now on Local multiplexes.

If you have a Smart TV, you can access many of the programmes on HorrorXtra via the CBScatchup app. And IIRC via their website on a PC.

I'm not sure where you get the idea that Freeview will be switched off in a "few years" anyway! The current multiplex licences run until 2034, so some time to run as a likely minimum. OFCOM had previously indicated that they were not at all keen on giving up any more current TV frequencies for mobile usage!

As for current disruptions to reception, I'm afraid it's down to current weather conditions -

They have been causing Tropospheric Ducting affecting much of the south coast and southern parts of the country on Saturday and now extending into the Midlands and North of the country through Sunday including East Anglia, now currently affecting Wales and England. This causes interfering signals from distant transmitters in Europe or the UK to affect reception of your wanted signals. This can periodically last, seconds, minutes and sometimes much longer - Do NOT Retune.
There is nothing you can do about this apart from wait for conditions to change, or use online streaming if available.

IF you did retune, you'd be best manually retuning the UHF channels for your transmitter, as detailed in the top section of the Blaenplwyf transmitter page.

The BBC and Freeview have issued warnings -
High pressure weather conditions impacting TV & Radio services - from 07 October | Help receiving TV and radio
High pressure could affect reception across parts of the UK this week | Freeview

Having problems with signal break up. Our TVs have been fine until a few months ago when we started getting channels breaking up at night, but they would be ok during the day - specifically channel 17 really and channels in that block. Had a tv guy over who fitted a new aerial on a taller pole, but still seems a problem. Last night couldn't get anything even bbc1. On the tv it says we have signal but the quality bounces up and down. We are in Redditch tuned to Sutton Coldfield.
