Doug Fry: Hi Doug. I notice that the 562.0 MHz frequency from Sandy Heath carries the COM7 multiplex and that it is transmitted at roughly 1/3 of the power of the more powerful multiplexes which are transmitted at 170,000 kW from Sandy. It would be interesting to know how this channel normally comes into your receiver at your location. By the way, are you aware that there have been high pressure atmospheric conditions which have been affecting viewers' Freeview reception since the evening of Sunday 5th. June and through much of the day yesterday? If your channel losses are a consequence of the high pressure, all you can do is to wait until the atmospheric pressure lowers: you could study the weather forecast inbetweentimes! Richard, Norwich

Now that BBC3 HD has gone online , why does the BBC not enable BBC4 HD in its place.
? It would enable users in my area of East Sussex to get this popular channel in HD on freeview.

joanna s : Hi, Joanna. The channel vacated by BBC3 HD was given to Channel 5HD, now on 105, where I believe BBC3HD used to be. BBC4HD is on Freeview HD, channel number 106, carried by the group of channels or 'multiplex called 'COM7' or 'ArqC'. The difficulty viewers such as yourself may experience is that COM7 is not carried by all Freeview transmitters. If, for example, you were to be living in the Lewes area of East Sussex, you would be using the Lewes relay tv transmitter, which only carries three groups of channels: PSB1 (aka BBCA), PSB2 ( aka D3+4) and PSB3 (aka BBCB). As you may know, PSB1 carries BBC1,BBC2, BBC4, CBBC, CBeebies, BBCNews, BBC Parliament and BBC Radio stations. The tv channels in this group are all transmitted in standard definition (SD).PSB2 carries ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV2, More4, Film4, ITV4, E4, ITV+1 andFreeview Info screen, again, all in SD. Finally, PSB3 carries: BBC1HD, BBC2HD, ITVHD, Channel 4 HD and Channel Five HD, so the BBC were gracious enough to give up what, as you say, could have been theirs, to Channel Five! Hope this enlightens you sufficiently! Any queries, come back for more info! Richard, Norwich.

Thank you. What a waste. Who watches channel 5????
BBC4 is a vastly superior channel with content such as the recent fabulous serious about China which cries out for HD to get full benefit.

joanna s : Who watches Channel 5? Its got about a 4% audience share last week in total , so a little behind C4. Frankly, C5 in HD has been long overdue.
I love BBC4, but if its not transmitting currently in HD, you have some choices. Its not impossible you might be able to get it via another transmitter, or you could go for Freesat (a good option for anyone in a Freeview lite area), or stream it in HD via Iplayer.

joanna s : Hi Joanna.
This has been my gripe for years! Living in Eastbourne, I am served by the Heathfield transmitter which although it broadcast BBC3 HD, could not transmit BBC4HD as it did not have the Comm 7 carrier.
I wrote to the BBC when BBC3 HD went online and asked why BBC4HD could not take its place, but received no reply.
I had heard that it would eventually arrive and low and behold, having retuned my Panasonic bluray recorder tonight (28th July)there it is, on channel 106! Just in time for the rest of the Prom relays.
Hope you can get it too.

John Mitchell: Yes, but its only being broadcast on PSB3 as a temporary measure during the Olympics, as BBC4 HD is moving to COM8 after same has ended.

John Mitchell: That's very interesting! I also use the Heathfield transmitter. Been waiting for BBC4HD ever since BBC3HD closed. Will re-tune this evening.
Thanks.

Well that is a nice surprise - so for at least the duration of the Olympics I can see and hear the proms in HD sound and vision. So good news for Brighton - let's hope it stays there!

Hi jb38.
Well that's disappointing! Had not realized that BBC 4HD from Heathfield was a temporary measure, just for the duration of the Olympics. I would not have thought it would be too costly to put BBC 4 HD on the red button as well as COM8 after the Olympics. I believe this was done one year, following the appointment of Lord hall as D- G in 2012, before it was rolled out to 70% of the population in the UK.
This still leaves millions of viewers without BBC 4HD. In East Sussex alone, just 70 miles from London, the population is over 500,00, many of which rely on transmissions from Heathfield. Ironically, CBBC HD, which we can receive, was extended to 8.30pm when BBC3 HD was axed. Surely that would have been the ideal opportunity for BBC4 HD to be given wider coverage.
Come to that, does the CBBC content benefit that much in HD? As a lot of it is studio based, I don't suppose many children would be really bothered if they could only view in SD. Surely a channel set aside for the Arts, should have priority? Many BBC4 lovers have had to buy Satellite receivers to watch in HD. and they are the ones who also pay the licence fee!
Pity someone can't organize an online petition to demonstrate to Lord Hall just how many viewers are still deprived of watching in HD, the Arts channel of which he is so proud. I would if I knew how.
Regards
A disgruntled BBC4 viewer.
