Freeview Mumbles Something About Having Loads of Telly on it

Freeview, the umbrella term for telly that used to come through the air and now comes mostly through apps and smart TVs and whatnot, would like us to talk about a personal milestone it has achieved in the world of on-demand content. The arbitrary milestone that no one was aware of the significance of is the passing of the 20,000 hours of content level, which Freeview says it has sailed through thanks to the addition of Channel 5's catch-up services, piped through My5, to its array of on-demand television formerly known as the terrestrial selection. - www.gizmodo.co.uk

Amazon and Google deliver on TV peace deal

Amazon and Google have drawn a line under a long-running dispute by providing their on-demand video services to each others' TV platforms. The lack of a YouTube app on Amazon's TV platform - FireTV - was a significant handicap for Amazon, and I imagine Google wasn't too thrilled about missing out on reaching the 30 million-or-so FireTV users either. - www.bbc.co.uk

Licensing small-scale DAB How Ofcom would exercise new functions proposed by Government

Small-scale DAB is a new way of transmitting digital radio that uses advances in software and lowcost computer technology to provide a flexible and inexpensive approach to the terrestrial broadcast of digital radio services to a relatively small geographic area. The concept was first tested by Ofcom engineer Rashid Mustapha in 2012 and subsequently the Government funded a series of trials, licensed and facilitated by Ofcom, to test the feasibility of the technology. The trials demonstrated that small-scale DAB can provide a robust and reliable means for small analogue stations to broadcast on digital, - www.ofcom.org.uk

Broadband speeds boost for UK homes

Only one-in-10 homes with basic, copper broadband are able to stream their favourite shows in UHD. With more than nine-in-ten UK homes and small businesses now able to get superfast connections, many on standard broadband could improve their streaming experience by upgrading - often without paying more than they do now. Ofcom's Boost Your Broadband campaign allows people to easily check what broadband is available in their area, see what broadband is best for their needs and get advice on how to secure the right deal for them. - dtg.org.uk

BBC iPlayer can show programmes for a year instead of 30 days

The BBC will be allowed to keep programmes on its iPlayer service for up to a year after they are first broadcast rather than the current 30 days, in an attempt to help the corporation compete with Netflix. The availability of individual programmes on iPlayer may rely on negotiations with the independent production companies that make shows for the BBC. Many BBC programmes are likely to transfer to the forthcoming paid-for BritBox service after 12 months, which will require an additional subscription on top of the licence fee. - www.theguardian.com

Evening Standard comment: Free licence fees won't help the BBC survive

They shouldn't lose out, which is why the BBC is right to offer free licences to every household that has someone on pension credit benefit - around 900,000 do so at present but the number that could be eligible could reach 1.5 million by 2020. If we want the BBC to survive - and we do - then those who can afford to pay should do so. - www.standard.co.uk
