I live on Brecon Road in Pontardawe directly opposite Alltwen Hill Transmitter, no more than a mile away as we have direct line of sight.I have a low signal aerial with the elements vertical, as instructed, yet I still have pictures breaking & I have lost several channels to low signal. The breaking picture is worse with some channels than others & the ones I have lost there seems to be no reason for as nothing has changed. I have noticed that my next door neighbour has recently had an aerial fitted but that is pointing to Kilvay Hill transmitter. Do I need to do this to get a good signal as Alltwen is totally rubbish?

Chris Clement: Alltwen only broadcasts the Public Service Broadcaster (PSB) channels/multiplexes. This covers all BBC channels, ITV1, ITV2, S4C, C4, E4, More4, C5 and a few others. If the reception of these channels are OK, then there is probably no issue with your reception from Alltwen. It also means that if your tuner has picked up the commercial channels (ITV3, Pick TV, Dave etc), then they will be coming from somewhere else which will explain poor reception on those channels.

It is possible that your tuner has decided to go with the signals coming from another transmitter and the two likely suspects for this in your area are Kilvey Hill and Pontardawe. Have you confirmed that BBC and ITV1/C4/C5 are tuned to Ch43 and Ch46 respectively. (Also Ch50 for HD services where applicable). This information will probably be given on the signal strength/quality screen whilst one of those stations are selected.

Chris Clement: If BBC is tuned to Ch23 and ITV1 to Ch26, then your receiver is tuned to Kilvey Hill. Alltwen's services might be in the 800s.

If BBC is 61 and ITV1 58, then it is on Pontardawe transmitter.

The likely reason for changing an aerial from a small relay to a main station/larger relay (where reception from such a station is possible) is so as to get the commercial channels (as the small relays don't carry them). In the days of four-channel analogue it didn't matter as far as viewer choice was concerned.

Today there are those who may be better served by relays (with what you might call a "normal" aerial) who will invest in a larger and more expensive aerial installation so as to pick up from the main station in order to get the commercial channels. There are also those who have no choice but to go with the relay.

Chris Clement: If it is tuned to another transmitter, you might (depending on the design of the receiver) be able to delete the current channels and manually tune in the two or three required.

Or run the auto tune scan with the aerial unplugged up until 25% and then unplug it again when it gets to 65%. That way you will only have it plugged in for Alltwen (Kilvey Hill uses lower frequencies and Pontardawe uses higher ones).
