I don't know if anyone has ever asked this, but although Ferryside was the first transmitter to go digital, the fact that it's a relay, I don't understand why it has a 4th multiplex transmitting from it (SDN).

All other relays appear to have 3 or 6 multiplexes so why does this have 4?

Is this just a one-off special as it was the first one to switch so Ferryside viewers just have that extra privilege than other Freeview Lite viewers?

Stuart O.: Ferryside was the first transmitter in the UK to switch in 2005:

BBC NEWS | Wales | South West Wales | Two towns pioneer digital TV

Perhaps carrying SDN has come about as a result of that and it wouldn't have got it otherwise (its ERP is only 25W).

Hi Dave Lindsay,
As I said in my post above,'it was the first one to switch', but thanks anyway for the BBC news link.

I've noticed in the past how you seem to be able to respond to my posts so soon after posting them.
I was just curious so I hope you don't mind me asking, but how are you able to respond to my posts so soon after posting them?

Are you one of the people who run this website? Therefore do you receive an email every time someone posts something on the site and as to what and where they posted on the site?

I'm interested to know so hope you can explain.

Thanks.

Kilgetty

just moved to sa68 postcode (Kilgetty) area, according to the reception post code checker I can not get a signal from any transmitter at this location? must say I thought this might be the case as all local arrays are on mile high poles and point in all directions, looks like I have to stay on free to air satellite. Don't suppose there are any plans to upgrade transmission, or am i just being silly?

frank ward: Predictors can never be entirely accurate. They certainly don't say what you "should" be able to receive.

The fact that you live on a slope could be an issue as it could mean that what can and cannot be received varies by property. And of course, being in a bungalow you are lower to the ground (I assume this to be the case having looked at Streetview). Looking at where others are receiving from may be a useful start.

By my reckoning, there are a number of aerials on Preseli which is in the direction that the land goes upwards.

Some aerials appear to be pointing at Huntshaw Cross (154 degrees, horizontally polarised). However this is across the Severn and therefore doesn't broadcast Welsh regional programming.

Then there are a few vertically polarised aerials pointing east which could be on Ferryside (83 degrees) or perhaps Kilvey Hill (104 degrees). The thing with Ferryside is that it is 15 miles away and is only a few watts, so anything less than line-of-sight won't work. Plus Greenhill is co-channel on 21 (BBC) and 24 (HD) which probably explains why Ferryside is at 25W for these whereas 30 (ITV1, C4 etc) is 5W.

Where does your aerial or aerials point?

This page for the Ferryside transmitter says that it only carries bbc a, bbc b and d3+4. In fact it states that sdn channels are not available. However, the section lower down with changes over time includes sdn on channel 27. Certainly we seem to get 27 with the same strength as the others. Is the information wrong?

Graham : SDN being mentioned would indeed appear to be an error, however if you can view programmes on SDN such as ITV3 etc then you will likely be receiving it from the Preseli transmitter, a way to verify being to carry out a signal check whilst viewing ITV3 and note the number of the Mux channel associated with the strength / quality, if its C42 then the transmission is from Preseli.

Graham.; jb38: The Ferryside transmitter is unique. It was the first transmitter to be converted to digital and carries PSB1, PSB2, PSB3 (HD) and COM4 (SDN). It is probably for this reason that this website has trouble showing it - because usually transmitters are either PSB-only or PSB+COMs 4, 5 and 6.
