Broadband speeds boost for UK homes

Only one-in-10 homes with basic, copper broadband are able to stream their favourite shows in UHD. With more than nine-in-ten UK homes and small businesses now able to get superfast connections, many on standard broadband could improve their streaming experience by upgrading - often without paying more than they do now. Ofcom's Boost Your Broadband campaign allows people to easily check what broadband is available in their area, see what broadband is best for their needs and get advice on how to secure the right deal for them. - dtg.org.uk

Getty Images/BBC Cutting the pay of stars and senior managers would only save a fraction of the cost of free TV licences for older people, the BBC has said. Continuing the universal scheme would cost 745m, a fifth of the BBC's budget and equivalent to the cost of BBC Two, BBC Four, the BBC News Channel, the BBC Scotland channel, Radio 5 Live and a number of local radio stations. - www.bbc.co.uk

BBC iPlayer can show programmes for a year instead of 30 days

The BBC will be allowed to keep programmes on its iPlayer service for up to a year after they are first broadcast rather than the current 30 days, in an attempt to help the corporation compete with Netflix. The availability of individual programmes on iPlayer may rely on negotiations with the independent production companies that make shows for the BBC. Many BBC programmes are likely to transfer to the forthcoming paid-for BritBox service after 12 months, which will require an additional subscription on top of the licence fee. - www.theguardian.com

Evening Standard comment: Free licence fees won't help the BBC survive

They shouldn't lose out, which is why the BBC is right to offer free licences to every household that has someone on pension credit benefit - around 900,000 do so at present but the number that could be eligible could reach 1.5 million by 2020. If we want the BBC to survive - and we do - then those who can afford to pay should do so. - www.standard.co.uk

Buying cables? Going for gold could mean a rip-off

The actual speed you get is entirely dependent on what you're connecting - a slow internet connection is not going to be made faster by a high spec cable - so unless you know you need to transfer data over 1Gbps don't spend the extra on cat6 cables. Charging cables for phones are probably the most lost or broken cables around. - www.theguardian.com

TV Licences: Up to 3.7 million over-75s to pay licence fee

PA Up to 3.7 million pensioners who previously received a free TV licence will now have to pay for it. The elderly are by far the biggest consumers of the BBC's output, the average age of BBC TV's audience is now over 62, the question is how far younger licence fee payers should subsidise these older viewers. - www.bbc.co.uk

BT Ponder TV Funding for UK Netflix Rival Britbox with BBC and ITV

Telecoms and broadband ISP BT is reportedly involved in talks that could see them provide millions of extra funding to support the UK launch of a new internet video streaming service, Britbox, which is backed by the BBC and ITV this is currently only available to consumers in the USA and Canada. On top of that the BBC and ITV have yet to agree their own terms for Britbox's UK launch, which has reportedly been complicated by the question of rights ownership and the BBC's plans to expand their iPlayer streaming service. - www.ispreview.co.uk

The FM Chip Delusion by James Cridland

In comparison to Australia, Canadians pay almost FIVE TIMES MORE for a monthly plan that gives a THIRD LESS DATA. Perhaps Canadian radio broadcasters sense an opportunity if FM chips are enabled. If the Canadian cellular networks aren't pressuring the likes of Google and Apple for FM chips to be enabled - and let me remind you again, they own the FM radio networks - that points to a bigger issue. - www.allaccess.com
