nick horrex: Since it serves just 9500 homes, why would anyone bother?

Nick Horrex:

Aldeburgh is a Freeview Light transmitter covering a relatively small number of viewers. Its 3 multiplexes are all rated at 10kW, which is not at all considered 'high powered' considering that a main transmitter would have multiplexes radiated at 100kW or more, in some cases greater than 1 MW. Aldeburgh is intended to 'fill in' an area with poor reception from the main transmitter covering much, but not all, of the area.

nick horrex: Can you really imagine the commercial broadcasters wanting to put their full range of services on a transmitter that serves less than 10k households?

Freesat, methinks.

There has been a considerable amount of new builds in the Aldeburgh area in recent years so the amount of Freeview viewers has increased considerably. Anyway, we all pay the same licence fee whether we have the full range of channels or not.

Adrien: Why do you think the licence fee has anything to do with the number of channels you receive? It isn't a subscription and you are already getting all of the BBC services which it funds. The commercial broadcasters do not receive anything from your licence fee and are not interested in expanding beyond the coverage levels they currently have on Freeview.
