Nick: Parliament never made such a provision when enacting the regulations, so whilst it is your opinion, it isn't the law. It may also be unlawful as a "restraint of trade".

Nick: Again, that's a commercial decision for the broadcasters to take. They're limited by the capacity of the Astra 2D satellite, which - for at least a few more months - is the only one which has a footprint covering only the British Isles. The channels that are on Europe-wide transponders have to encrypt, or they would have to pay much more for content rights.
The BBC are reshuffling their services onto fewer transponders, but this is so they can stop paying for one Europe-wide transponder, none of the free-to-air capacity would be freed up. However, it could allow Sky to move some (renting) services off 2D, where they're taking up valuable capacity, and make another FTA transponder available.
There will shortly be some more FTA capacity, probably in a couple of months, when Astra 1N reaches the rest of the cluster. This satellite is really intended for the Astra 1 cluster at 19.2°E but the need is more urgent at 28.2°. It has a spot beam for the British Isles as well as one each for western Europe and all-of-Europe.
Ofcom have no rights whatsoever to direct satellite transmissions, barring licensing the channels to broadcast at all. They cannot require channels, other than the PSB channels ITV1, STV, UTV, Channel 4, S4C and Channel 5, to transmit on any service. (The BBC Trust regulates BBC services.) EU rules allow channels to shop for any regulator within the EU.

Dear Mike and Brian,
Thank you again. It seems complicated. All I have in mind here is that some time ago Brian said freesat was designed for areas such as mine, so was not best pleased having bought it, to find we were short changed on channels.
Can you explain to me how freesat works? If , for example, I am watching BBC 1, is that the same signal which is going out on Sky? Or are there two BBC 1s up in the sky? If two, it seems a waste of what is available for other channels, and if one, what was the point of starting freesat?

Nick: The BBC rents space on the Astra 2D satellite, and uplinks 15 versions of BBC One - Which BBC regions are on satellite? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice .
These 15 streams are used by all satellite systems, be they "provided" by Sky or Freesat.

Edward: The docks are close to sea level so shadowing will affect the signal strength from both Sudbury and the low power Felixstowe transmitter in the Ranelagh Road car park. Use the "terrain" feature on this site to see what's going on in your postcode area.

Felixstowe PSB1 is listed as having positive offset, C33+, above. The 700MHz Clearance spreadsheet from Ofcom, the 700MHz Clearance Events sheet for the Anglia region from Digital UK and the Freeview Detailed Coverage Checker all show it does not.

No more than a mile from the transmitter.
All other channels are good. Been like this for about
3 months. No reported issues on the free view web
pages. Something must be wrong?

Steve Mitchdll: Have you confirmed that you are actually tuned to Felixstowe and not Sudbury or another transmitter, if one is available?
Felixstowe PSB1 / BBC A multiplex (which carries standard definition BBC TV and BBC radio) is on UHF channel 33 (570MHz).
PSB1 from Sudbury is UHF channel 44 (658MHz).
Are you still getting BBC HD channels OK? All HD channels, BBC and non-BBC ones, are carried on the same multiplex.
Having confirmed you are tuned to Felixstowe, then are you aware of receiving a postcard from Restore TV and if not, check on its website by entering your postcode: https://restoretv.uk/post…ure/
Restore TV is the organisation charged with alleviating TV reception issues caused by mobile phone masts. If you have received a postcard, then they will send you a free filter. This must go before any amplifier/booster. If there is an amplifier outside such as on the roof then tell them and they should send an engineer to fit a suitable waterproof filter on the aerial cable before it enters the amplifier.
If you have no amplifier and the most straightforward and common configuration of an aerial with single aerial cable coming down from the roof to where the TV is, then none of what I said in the last paragraph applies.
The other thing I should say is that faulty aerial, connector or cable can potentially cause an issue with one or more but not all channels.
