ray stephenson: ukfree.tv is an independent website.

The reason it is as it is is because the commercial channels that you can't receive broadcast only from those transmitters that they wish to.

They transmit from about 80 of the largest transmitters in the UK. They were invited to extend their coverage, but declined. To broadcast from the 1000 or so relay (or small filler-in) transmitters would have roughly doubled the cost of transmission. As their objective is to generate profit from advertisers, it is not surprising that they didn't wish to do this when it would mean only an extra 8% of the population being able to watch their broadcasts.

See here for a fuller explanation:

when will the signal be back on air? will Ihave more channels? Is this scheduled work or emergency repairs due to weather conditions? did I miss publicised notifications of this interruption in service?

LML PALLING: I don't think that you're likely to be able to receive more channels. You can only do this if it is possible at your location to pick up the signals from a full-service transmitter. This may be prevented due to the terrain between you and those transmitters (e.g. Caldbeck).

The reason that we now have a two-tier transmitter network is set out here:

LML PALLING: The local electricity network distributor does not report a power outage at the transmitter's location, so that appears to dismiss that as a reason for it going off-air.

I would assume that any engineering work is likely to be carried out during normal working ours, so I would be surprised if it remains off after 5 or 6 o'clock.
