My digital arial is pointed towards Kilve I have subscribed to BT vision and originally took the package of having sky sport 1 and 2 however bt have informed me that the Kilve transmitter is unable to transmit sky sports 1 and 2 on the sky vision service. Can you please confirm if this is the case and what the reason is.
many thanks Hugh tames

hugh james: That is correct. Kilve is a "Freeview Light" transmitter and therefore only carries the "Public Service Broadcaster" multiplexes (groups of channels) which are the BBC, ITV1, ITV2, C4, E4, C5 and a few others.

BT Vision uses the Freeview service and Sky Sports 1 and 2 are carried on one of the commercial multiplexes which does not broadcast from Kilve.

The reason for this is due to the fact that the commercial operators operate on a commercial basis and not one which is to serve as much of the population as possible. For a fuller explanation, see here:

Will there ever be more services on the Freeview Light transmitters? | ukfree.tv - independent free digital TV advice

The only possibility you *might* have is if you can receive signals from another transmitter that does carry these services. As you face Wales, you might be able to receive them from one of the transmitters there, and use your aerial on Kilve for regional programming.

I receive all freeview and ITV, channel 4 and 5 etc but not any BBC including digital radio. This problem started about 10 days ago. Strangely a pixilated signal appears at about 19.00 but then disappears by 20.30. Aerial is on roof. My postcode us TA51ED. I have tried retuning the TV many times and I have disconnected, cut about 2cm of aerial cable off and reconnected to a new front plate.

BobMudd:

Please put your full Post Code into the Digital UK Coverage Checker at Digital UK - Coverage checker will show yopu th4e expected reception for your location. It will also allow you to check that you are tuning to the correct channels as many have changed recently. It will also suggst whether you need to change your aerial as some aerial do not receive all the available channels.

BobMudd: thanks but the transmitter us a local one for our village. Further investigation suggests that it is one Mux that I am not receiving. But again why can I receive it at 19.00 but by 20.30 it disappears totally? So I receive the Mux at 706 and 746 KHz but not the Mux at 778MHz. And why can I receive it for about an hour or so and then it goes off?

Without knowledge of which transmitter you are near to nor the expected reception conditions, it is impossible to advise. Please provide a full posy code to this website so we can check those conditions.

MikeP: TA51EQ and it is called the Kilve Transmitter. It is in Somerset by the way. The details to the site are part of ukfree.tv website. The site tells me there is nothing wrong with the transmitter. Oh, for no reason, no BBC suite of programmes all evening until 22.30. Watching it now in fact and all seems normal. What is going on? Thanks for your replies and interest.

Bob Mudd:

According to Digital UK, you are almost on top of the transmitter - see Coverage Checker - Detailed View That is set to show reception expectations at your location. You should be getting excellent results for all three multiplexes.

Can you check what the signal strengths are for all three, please? The ideal levels are between 60% and 85%. Any less or any more is a problem (the output from the transmitter does not vary). If it is more, which is entirely poissible as you are so close, then you need to use an attentuator to reduce it to a level given above.

The other possibility is local interference.
